Dropped the M Coupe off this morning at BMW Long Acre for a quick air con re-gas . . . got a call mid-morning saying that the compressor and evaporator/dryer need replacing and that it would cost me £1,065 :!:
Luckily however I did renew the warranty and so all the work is covered
That clears up any doubts I had about whether or not to renew the warranty next time around . . .

Well I renewed mine last month and everythings been hunky dory until now. She's back in on Weds for a really worrying noise when braking. Also the smell of petrol blowing into the cabin under hard accelerating has returned.
I reckon if we keep a track of stuff like this and have post costs involved we'll all get a clearer picture on true costs.
So far mine has only been into be fixed once :)

think mine needs the same work :(
main dealer prices are horrendus, have been quoted around £600 all in for the same at a specialist, unfortunately I am not sure if warranty(third party) covers?

This has just happened to me - took it to a local garage yesterday for a recharge and they carried out a leak sniffer test which determined that the condensor was cracked and leaking and a new drier was needed as well. Booked into the stealers Wed, but at least I have some backup if they start quibbling about warranty cover. No doubt I'll be shafted for the air con recharge though...

Dallon - did they know you had a warranty when they found the fault out ??
Just wobndering if they were 'making' work for themselves which then backfired to a certain extent as you wont be paying ?
Cheers

Aircon regas should be circa £45 and won't affect anything if you get it done elsewhere, get them to fix what needs fixing and get it regassed by a 3rd party.
Dallon - Had the same problem with mine when car less than 3 yrs old.
Turned down the stealer's offer to replace the unit for GBP 1,000-plus, as I live in England after all and can put up with a few days (at most) of mild discomfort a year.
Having said that, three weeks in Southern Italy in the summer of '03 wasn't a very pleasant experience with temps consistently and significantly above 40 degrees C...

I think a bit of confusion with me dragging up a year-old post for reference, but nevertheless...
Update: Cooper Wimbledon have now replaced the condensor and drier for no cost (and no quibbling) under the EW. Will wait to see if they recharged the aircon as well (under goodwill) although I'm not holding my breath....

Just picked up this thread . . . they didn't know I had a warranty when they checked it out, but to be fair it definitely wasn't working properly so it seemed like a fair diagnosis. Although I was surprised at how much it was and that an internal unit can 'crack' so easily!
hmmm, my airco seized as well, now arrenty anymore, so I'll see what happens :?

I just had mine replaced under warranty too. I didn't pay for regass as my arguement was it would not have needed doing had the parts not failed

I've had a new condensor fitted under warranty, with complimentary regas. Might have something to do with the car beeing sold under BMW Approved Used Scheme WITH THE AIRCON NOT WORKING!!!

The more and more I read about the AUC scheme, the less I like it

I agree from first hand experience about AUC.
I have it from the salesman's mouth that having them bought the car for 15 K spent 2.5K on it they were not willing to do anymore work on it for my purchase price of 17.9 K, so they let the warranty sort out the rest.
Still warranty does save the day!
Aircon Condensor and regas 1K
Front caliper £200
Outside temp gauge £200
New illuminated gearstick £200
Plus four car washes
