Woke up hungover and in a bad mood  . Who can I take it out on? - SPAMMERS :D
In the memberlist, taking Luni23X as member no 1, which it was at 8am, the following are traders sites only and nothing to do with the M Coupe:
Yank drugs 3 8 13 32 33 43 68 69 72 79 81 117

LOL - I can't see how to ban these people other than entering their username onto the ban list (which still means they can post from their IP as we can't find that until they post).
When the people in white coats release you (of if anyone else has a spare hour) can you list them by username and I'll ban them one by one - the only option I can see. Long and labourious.
Edit - as of 2.30 today I'm hoping we will not get any more spammer members.

there must be a way to stop all this crap entering our site, like every other red blooded male i am not opposed to this entirely, but if i want this sort of material then i know where to find it, and it's not on here.
Why can't we set something up whereby any newcomer has to apply to join and post, possibly to one of the moderators, but they can view all they want.
If people are genuine then this will not be an inconvenience to them, but might just put others off.

Simon,
Some time ago, after the site went AWOL, you said on the 'Lack of Topics' thread that the previous 12 months lost posts were backed up (but nothing before). Any news on that, as there was a lot of useful info during that period?

Yes we still have the old database Mr K but lack of time has resulted in no action.
I must take responsibility for this as Mike has a new family and business to sort out. I'll try my best to get a solution soon. I'll ask a techy or two through my biz for assistance. We need to merge the old and current databses which in theory shouldnt be hard.
While a shame so much info isn't currently available I'm certain a FAQ forum could easily be filled with the same usual questions and answers. I'll set one up now and move stuff when asked or spot a thread.
Simon.

Neil/Trundler,
thanks for the info on the latest spammers. I have now nearly sussed out what might be the best site mod to enable
1/ 'Registration Robots' (as somebody called them) to be ineffective in registering new members. This is by way of a registration obstacle which only a human being would be able easily to get around, and
2/ a 'Mass Delete Users' programme' which enables an Administrator authorised person to (very selectively) highlight one 'member' after another and then remove the whole highlighted lot at once. Going through the (alternative) process individually for each 'member' is impractical as it would takes hours and hours (and days).
Hopefully nearly there, then no more sex or drugs sites :(

All these spammers appear to be unregistered - could we change access to the gallery comments to registered members only?

I've turned comments off - I suppose if someone wants to post a thread here they can include a link to the photo they wish to discuss.

Night owl - I'm more of a drunken insomniac myself :)
There is a way to get rid of the dormant members, coupefan spent many an hour finding the fix. I, personally, can't sort it maybe down to lack of t'internet skilz, even tho surprisingly I actually studied computers at uni (although my c++ programming was total rubbish, hence me being in sales now).
As long as the forum is readable and not full of junk then we are ok I reckon.
Best get some zzs before the tennis at 8 :)

Spam all over the forum again! What is going on with the recruiting of more moderators?
These spamming idiots need to be banned!

Yep, we could have had these posts deleted. Also "beijmanli" is spamming.

The spam was deleted as soon as I became aware of it. Sorry it took a little longer than usual, but I actually went 24 hours without reading the forum, which is pretty rare.
Rather than posting here, or trying to paper over the problem by bumping other threads, please use the "report post" option on the top of any spam post. I think I can make it email me when this happens, so I'll find out quicker. It also gives a direct link to the spam, rather than leaving me searching for (as in this case). You only need do these once for each user (rather than once for each post) as I'll just delete the user and all their posts.

Seconded, but that does not address the central issue plaguing this forum.

Might be wrong but the second reply on my “Air-con problem” thread in "Technical discussion" appears to be spam. [“KaiyureBoy”] [And by the way, is it possible to edit the title to a thread? Called it air-com by mistake]

OK, it's probably worth explaining why this is an issue and what can't be done to stop it. At around the time that we moved the site to the new server, we also changed it so that all forums are publicly visible (but not postable). Aside from making the forum more accessible to new users, who would otherwise have to sign-up for an account before they could see any posts, the main reason for doing this was to build Google page rank for the site. If you type any of the following into Google:
"Z3 Coupe"
"M Coupe"
"Z3 M Coupe"
You see that this site is the top result. This is great news if we want to attract new owners to the site, but it also attracts spammers. Spammers can build the page rank of their own sites if they can create links to it from another site with page rank. This is why it is attractive to sign-up for accounts on this forum and link to other sites.
Spammers have gone to a vast amount of effort to automate the process of spamming forum sites. The posting is almost certainly automated, and the sign-up process may well be too. Our sign-up is already about as bot-proof as we can make it as it requires both a response to an email (to prove that the user is using a legitimate email address) and reading a CAPTCHA - one of those images which contains an obscured text string that the user must enter. These are pretty hard to automate, but many of them have been broken.
There's a few things that we can do to further reduce spam. These include:
1. Moderate the first post of all new users (this can be done, but requires some effort to set up)
2. Make the CAPTCHA stronger. There are some options that I can fiddle with on the forum software.
3. Moderate the first post of all new users who sign-up with address from the well known free mail provides (hotmail, gmail, yahoo). I'm not certain if this is possible in the forum software, but it would require less moderation effort than (1).
I'm intrigued by the suggestion that spam is "plaguing" this forum. We've had 2 or 3 incidents of spam this year. I don't know about your email, but I get around 200 spam emails a day, only half of which are caught by my spam filter. The spam on this forum gets cleaned up reasonably promptly - and when it does, it is deleted without trace.
Obviously, if we implement either options 1 or 3, some more moderation effort will be needed. We already have a thread containing volunteers to be moderators. I can contact a couple of people on that thread and sign them up.

Paul,
Updating the forum software to the latest version may well do the trick - if you get a spare mo can you sort it ? We may need to pay, so let me know on that front.

I've now done this. Apologies to those people who tried to post since I set it up at 2am this morning - I didn't get it quite right first time.

Thanks for your efforts Paul...
I like a few other posted in the volunteers to be moderators thread and have not really received a response...
There are a lot of helpful people on here willing to help out and would certainly make your life easier on deleting these spammers.
