Hello,

My Dad picked up his Z3M coupe a couple of days ago (I joined here last year to gather info for him, so he`s been waiting a while!) and the car is spot on apart from a couple of minor things.

First, there is a gap in the far right hand side of the tool compartment in the boot, I assume a jack is meant to go there. It is missing. What is the jack from (i.e. any other BM?) and whats the rough replacement cost?

The second issue is, when driving, from the passenger side rear there is a sort of metally noise (sounds a bit like shaking a bunch of keys) every time the car hits a bump in the road. You cant hear it from inside the car when the window is up, so its not that noisy. I have had the wheel off and jacked up and cant see anything obviously loose, so any ideas please?

Sorry for the long first post!

Thanks in advance,
JJ

Welcome JJ

I had a similar thing which was related to the handbrake,

but also I have heard something else like this and was told it was to do with the topmounts.

Hope this helps

Welcome to the forum.

It doesn't come with a jack unless my one is missing too!! It has an M Mobility system (fancy puncture repari kit) in the boot in the left hand corner.

correct - no jack, as there's not the room for a spare I guess?

why would you need a jack? just call the AA!

Ok, it has no jack... So what goes in the slots to the right hand side of the tool compartment?

And whats the repair / replace procedure if its the top mounts (and is there a surefire way to check?)

the replacment of the top moints means stripping the rear out of all trim, most people have had them done under EW!

The rear top mounts when they've gone sound like a bang to me.

Is the noise coming from the rear? Try lifting the handbrake a notch or 2 whilst driving, the shoes can some times clatter a bit when there's no tension on them.

c_w will try that later, thanks. It does definately sound like the rear, we went through a tunnel last night and with the window down and listening out it is def coming from the rear.

Will report back later!

hello?

On the M roadster the right hand side of the tool tray is also empty. Mobilty kits sits in a pocket on the right hand side.

Rattles could also be:

Handbrake
cat heatshields
fuel tank straps

I had a similar thing, it was the wrong size pads on the rear and they wer rattleing around.

Try driving slowly over somthing bumpy with your head out the window

I used one of those ridged thingys you drive over as you enter a cul de sac on a new estate up the road.

Hope that made sense :?

Well, just been out for a spin and tried driving with the handbrake on a notch...... and that cured it!

So, how do you stop it rattling altogether.....

heheh, when mine has done it when I've pulled the handbrake up a bit it seems to settle the shoes or something and stops it for the remainder of the drive. I've not noticed it in a long time now so it might be something that goes away once the car is used more and the handbrake is put on tightly (this might change some auto-tensioning mechanism??).

If the car is a relatively low mileage car and has spent much time standing with the hand-brake on before you bought it, then corrosion sometimes causes problems of this sort. Perhaps a little bit of use will free things up. I always leave my MC in the garage with the handbrake off to prevent this problem.
