  • Quick enough!?!

Been thinking about a dyno run but nothing too near me!!

The reason - cant seem to blow away let alone pass cars that, on paper at least, an MC should be superior to (in a straight line) ops: ops: - the cars in question (that I have had a clear balls out run in with):

Boxter S (New Model) from c.40mph to 100mph
    Audi S4 (2004 model) from c.70mph to 110mph

Could only maintain contact with both cars rather than seriously gain on them - although did leave a 328 ferrari for dust   !!

Any other similar experiences out there or does my baby need some tinkering with   ?

Check your throttle cable. I didn't realise how fast mine was until I had it adjusted.

The problem is fast cars are getting faster these days so almost-supercar performance nearly 10years ago is merely quick these days.

Also the Boxster S whilst only around "270bhp" is lighter than an M Coupe and Porsche BHP is going to be stronger than BMW's optimistic 321bhp PLUS the gearing on a Boxster (6 speed) will be shorter and closer ratio. So all that considered it shouldn't be quicker but won't be far off, and top speed wouldn't be much in it as the Porsche is a lot more aerodynamic and they hit 160mph too even with the power deficiet.

Not sure of the Audi S4, the old twin-turbo V6 wasn't that quick but was compared to the E36 M3 in its day.

I often drive my 205Mi16 (160bhp) so power to weight is around 175bhp/tonne vs the M Coupe's 210(?). Acceleration isn't as quick but it almost feels as quick due to the close short gearing in the 205.

I had a little test iwth a friend in a VX220 Turbo (with a stage 2 conversion) and whilst his had better ingear acceleartion due to tiny weight and turbo torque (and will record lows 4s to 60 easily), flat out acceleration from rolling in 2nd was about the same to high speed.

Get the throttle setting checked by a specialist/indy. I have just had mine done and the difference is unbelieveable. He reckoned I was 30% down on power before.

          He Vanman

I have regular plays with my pal and his Box S and from 50-60 upwards he really cant contend with my car.

cant vouch for the S4 but I am sure they are very quick (4.2 V8?)

meet with another MC owner for some comparisons.

It's also possible that either of those (quick) motors had made some
adjustment under the hood for a bit of extra punch, particularly if they were keen to play.

I had a dual with a Boxter S about a week ago. From about 60MPH up to about 110MPH (on a private road of course) and it was all over by that stage so I backed off.

It all started with the Boxter S thinking he could pull away from me so when he floored it I did the same (dropping from 5th to 3rd). We were only doing about 80MPH by the time he was getting in my way ( I could have drove into the back of hime quite easily). By about 90MPH he moved out of my way but still had his foot flat to the floor and I passed him at about a 100MPH and by 110MPH i had about 2 cars length on him. To be honest the perfromance difference was VERY noticeable, but I had I dropped from 5th to only 4th (instead of 3rd) at the start I think I would have been struggling.

As for the V8 S4. My mate has one and providing I am in the power band (5500 to near redline) I can pull away from him at virtually any speed, however if I am caught in the wrong gear the S4 is hard to keep with. I guess this is beacuse the V8 has loads of torque throughout the rev range so can tolerate being in the 'wrong gear' so to speak.

I woudl also note, that my engine is now about 16K from new as replaced under warranty and I also had a new throttle cable fitted recently which improved throttle response dramatically, so I woudl hope I am developing the full 321BHP.

My friend has a 996 Carrera 4S and I can pull away from him slowly from about 50mph onwards. A Boxster should not be a problem.

I had a quick toy with a new Audi RS4 only a few days ago in my S54. I pulled out initially which would only be the fact that I was already in front and he had the lag of realising id gone for it. From about 20mph - 110mph he maintained the gap. Got back home and studied 'The Knowledge' in Evo magazine to realise it has 414BHP and 0-100mph in 10.9secs (Evo quotes 11.4secs for S54)........very quick piece of kit and i wouldnt have stood a chance if it was damp/wet !!

Interesting reading - got her booked into Harpenden Autos for a throttle cable check!!

As for the cars - may have been that I should have been in a lower gear - also the lack speed that I go through the revs once passed 6k implied a cable might be in order.

Either way my car is no slouch and had trouble bagging what must have been a modified diesel focus - great in gear pull :!: :!: !

                        Is this Harpenden Auto Services?

I'm only up the road from you if you want a comparison. Don't want you picking on any more poor focus tdci's. :-)
