Hi all,

What's the established wisdon (factual or opinion) regarding oil fill level for the S50 engine ?

After changing the oil filter element, and draining the engine via the sump plug, I put in 5.5 litres of Castrol's finest. The dip-stick now shows the new oil level mid-way between max-min.

Previously, BMW oil services resulted in a 'max' oil level.

What's the forum's thoughts on S50 oil level ?

Thanks, Will

You should have the maximum amount of oil when the dipstick shows just below the level with the highest mark when the oil is up to temperature and the car's been stood for just 5 minutes, so my dealer tells me.

I supplied 6.5L of oil for a recent Insp 2, and I got back about 1/2L when I collected the car, I dipped the oil level as per the instruction manual and all was fine, i.e. it was just under the 'Max' mark.

Hi,

What oil do you use for your S50. Do you buy it from Stealers or Performance specialist?

Thanks

David

I use Silkolene Pro S 5w-40. The former owner of your car used the same. You can get it from Opie Oils. If you mention this website you should get a discount.

I did Imran, but as per my post on the other thread, I changed back to the BMW recommended Castrol stuff at the last service - forgot to get the replacement Silkolene in time.

Speaking of which I must have a part bottle of Pro S laying around somewhere!

The Castrol Mag 10w40 that I supplied came from the local petrol station ...
(I forgot to get it from in time for the service, and most likely paid a little more than I could have).
