Hi guys,

Has anyone changed the rear view mirror in their M coupe for a smaller one?

How much did it cost and was it from BMW?

cheers

Have been trawling the site and finally found something regarding the rear view mirror...which IMO creates an irritating blind spot.

Followed the link above to the z3mirrors site but am not happy in losing the standard oval look mirror by way of replacing the mirror altogether.

Does anyone know of an adaptor that could be used to retain the standard mirror, just to reposition it higher?

Or even any other smaller or higher mounted BMW mirror that would fit?

is the mirror from an E46 M3 or E39 M5 any better?
im not sure if it is smaller (i think it is in width?) :cheers2:

and it retains the original oval shape.

The problem with putting it higher means all you'll see behind is mainly the floor of the road.

I doubnt the M3/M5 mirror is smaller, it's just that the screen on those is a lot bigger! Also the seats sit lower so the mirror is not in view. I don't find the Z3M mirror a problem though but it might be for taller drivers.

"taller drivers" - not sure I agree with you there c_w - as I'm a short arse!

I'm going to have a look into this in more depth and will measure up a few different mirrors.
Will have a look at the mirror you mentioned indy  and see if it fits the job without losing any of the rear view...

Cheers

This was an issue for me when I first started driving the MC but you just get used to it.

I mean, if you're taller/sitting higher then probably more likely to find the mirror blocks your left/forward view. Sitting lower you don't.

The first one looks like it has a better suction fitting, a bit like a sat nav sucker with a lever;

Appreciated c_w but really looking for something that will look a bit smarter and try to retain the OEM look.

Does anyone know if the auto-dimming type can be wired in to work?

I'm positive that it has something to do with a certain car that I now own and makes me smile when I think about it - My friend who has had an Evo 9 since new has just traded it in for an e46 m3... :hurray:

I suppose that'll make it a lot easier for me to find an e46 m3 rear view mirror to measure up and compare against. :cornut:

Its not the size of the mirror its the size of the windscreen and where it is situated. The e46 m3 one is just as big I think.

I think neil M had a smaller square one put in by BMW in his car when he bought it.

Thanks.

I will know when I get the chance to compare the two side by side.

Mike, have you still got your M3? Measure the mirror so we know!! :D Like you say it's the smallness of the windscreen and the rake that is most of the "issue" people find with he rear view mirror.

Yeah, looks like someone has beaten me to it though !

my one is roughly 22.5 by 8 cm.

i think thats about right mike, my pics might be slightly mis leading as i took the pic of the height of the mirror from behind, and its curved there so makes it look smaller i think?

Great, thanks for posting those measurements Indy.

Just to confirm that the M Coupe's is 27.5cm (length) by 7.5cm (height) so there would be some advantage in regard to the width at least, however not yet sure about the height advantage if any.
