Hi Guy's
I am thinking of purchasing a Induction kit mainly for the sound it gives. Which ones have you guys got?
Any comments on sound, prices, performance increase (if any), fitting difficulties would be greatly appriciated. The loader, cheaper, easier to fit the better.
Thanks

David, I bought one from cosmo racing. It includes the pipe work to get a big filter on and clamps and a heat shield. IMHO it should have come with a better filter (ie K&N) but i am selling my car and turning it back to stock, so drop me a PM if this is of interest.

Thanks R80ter,
Whats it sound like. Can you hear it sucking like a old pro?
I'll see what the other guys come back with them I'll have a think. Its gonna be a month or so before i get around to it.
I read on an old thread that you had just removed your head unit/changer in favour of an ll singing/all dancing Alpine. Is it the BMW Business CD head unit or the cassette?
Can you control your pod from your Alpine headunit ie. select playlists and artists etc. Does it show song text. When you connect the ipod do you use the headphone socket or the docking station at the bottom. If you are using the headphone socket them the sound will be deadened by the headphone circuitry. If you use the bottom conection then the sound will be much clearer. Please forgive me if you already know this.
I should really get an ipod compatable one but all the headunits i have looked at would not look right in the dash. I guess if the intererior was black then there is not too much of an issue but mine is black/orange and therefore any additional colours start to look garish.
Thanks

It louder than stock and its louder than exdos's "modification", but in all honesty it would be louder still with a decent filter on it. currently its an unbranded "K&N Look"
As for the sounds stuff...
The alpine h/u will control playlists, artist search and album searches. The scrolling is slower than if you were doing it on the ipod, but it works well. You need to have an organised Itunes, and set playlists to use this to its potential.
It plugs into the docking port and charges the ipod while the ignition is on, so no need to ever remove the ipod! (except to update itunes)
My headunit fitted in well and you can change colours of the display so I had orange and it looked very good.
good luck.

it doesnt come alive until over 4k revs, mine is noisy but most importantly, unlike some induction kits, the gruppe m is not all grunt and no go, its one of the few that keeps performance and gives of the roar.
I have a adapted Dave F kit which uses a large KN filter. There have been many dyno runs to show the added perfromance that can be had from this kit on www.e36coupe.com.
The car sounds awesome and feels alot more responsive.
Going on the dyno this saturday.

Thats an excellent price! is that with filter? K&N??
what are they saying the power gains will be?
that DAVE F bloke is claiming 10-12 bhp! but i think it looks poo!

It comes with the a Simota cone type filter.
I'm not going to go into power claims right now because I haven't tested it.
The manufacturer obviously claims power gains of 10-12bhp.

how often are you looking under your bonnet? OK the gruppe M and the one mahaany is offering look great, but its a functional, not an asthetic upgrade. I have seen dyno graphs of before and after on an M3 evo with the dave F kit and 12 bhp was gained.
And IMHO the raw filter looks cool, but yeah, so does some nicely weaved carbon!

I have a pipercross viper induction which has been modified to work on the M coupe
sounds awesome and definitely improves torque higher up the range.

Just to add my 2 penn'orth. Some aftermarket induction kits may well show increases in hp and torque over the OEM air-intake system on a dyno, because in this situation the car is not running into a column of air with increased pressure proportional to the square of the speed of the wheels, since these are turning rollers rather than moving the car with genuine forward velocity. Obviously, in this situation the bigger the aperture of the air-intake, the better the engine will be able to aspirate (suck) air at less than ambient air pressure.
In the case of a car which is actually moving forwards, the OEM air-intake system will benefit by ram-effect caused by the increase in pressure which is greatest just in front of the front flippers on the bumper as per the diagram below, where the red area represents a zone of air at a pressure which is considerably higher than ambient pressure.
http://www.z3mcoupe.com/photopost/data//500/53front_splitter.jpg
In the OEM bumper there is a duct which is positioned just above the front flippers which supplies air to cool the front brakes and also to supply air to the air-intake system. Since the duct will tap directly into the zone of high pressure air, then the OEM air-intake system will considerably benefit, particularly at higher speeds, from this source of air at higher than ambient pressure. The fact that the tube feeding into the air-filter box is quite small, is an essential part of the design in keeping the pressure high when it enters the air-filter box. The build up of high pressure above the front flippers will not occur on a dyno, for reasons already explained, therefore on a dyno the performance of an MC with an OEM air-intake system will be less than on the road.
Therefore, it may well be possible to show a gain in power with an aftermarket air-induction kit on a dyno, but I very much doubt if this is the case when compared to the OEM air-intake system when in real world driving conditions where changes in air pressure occur.
As a matter of interest, the new Z4 MC also has virtually the same air-intake system as the MC, so BMW designers must know something aftermarket air-induction manufacturers don't.

I was just looking on the realoem website to see if I could look at the parts for the new Z4 MC and came across this for the air-intake systems of the ordinary Z4s: there's a "sound generator" fitted :!: Perhaps this is what you want instead of an induction kit?
http://www.realoem.com/bmw/showparts.do?model=BT51&mospid=47797&btnr=13_0999&hg=13&fg=20
Wonder if there's an equivalent sound generator fitted on the CSL we could use!!?

I think the sound of the CSL is more to do with the exhaust system: http://www.realoem.com/bmw/showparts.do?model=BL96&mospid=47622&btnr=18_0447&hg=18&fg=20
When you compare this thing to the two rear mufflers on the MC, it's like comparing a cello to 2 violins and hence the sound will be much richer.
If you were to remove the battery from the position it occupies in the rear of the MC, and locate it in the rear luggage compartment (as in the Z4 MC) then you could make a similar large single silencer like the CSL plus it could be shaped so that it also acted as a rear diffuser to increase downforce at the rear. BMW have previously utilised an aerodynamic rear silencer in the Z1, so none of this is new. If I were to make a bespoke trackday/racecar of a MC then I'd certainly go this route and fabricate an aluminium silencer which doubled as a diffuser with vertical strakes which acted as cooling fins for the silencer and also assisted in the aerodynamics.
I think the sound of the CSL is more to do with the exhaust system:
im just uploading a CSL video, when its done ill post it up!
from listening to the airbox on that most of the noise is coming from there, also i have heard a CSL at full chat 3rd gear close to the red line, i almost creamed my knickers!

CSL is the airbox. Drove one around a track and the noise is from the engine bay.

The CSL sound signature is mainly to do with the Air Box in conjuction with the exhaust but mainly the Air Box.
on the video i have, you can see the flap opening up for extra noise!

Have been to a few stereo shops today and have decided on a becker with the ipod link. fully functional ipod controls unsing headunit. Looks not too disimilar to the OEM headunits pretty plain. Just deciding wheather to pay another £40-50 quid for the bluetooth phone model.
Maahny,
Looking forward to those video/sound clips. Whats involved in fitting. Is it a case of old one off, new one or are there some slight mods to make.
Thanks

Tried to fit the Simota Kit for the E36 M3 but couldn't get it on without some modification which I did not want to do. Simota are developing one for the M Coupe/Roadster so as soon as it ready I will get one on my car and dyno it etc.
We did fit one to an E36 M3 and the owner (who had a Dave F kit) was so impressed he didn't let us take it off. I will make some vid/sound clips soon of his car and post them up.

Imran, this is basically a Gruppe M rep yes?
I have heard some good stuff about these.
I have run extra ducting to my induction kit this week, although it sounds great and definitely improves throttle response and torque higher up the range but I still think there is room for improvement.
tbh I do not think that the standard induction kits on the market are much different from each other, and I think it is definitely an area which the M coupe is lacking due to space and air flow
I really think the air box is the way to go for gains :!:
I have contacted several companies, still no reply from Mr Hellenbrand after the 2nd email!

Essentially yes but backed up by a reputable company and not a dodgy import from ebay.
The quality is very good. I can't wait for them to roll the first MC one off the production line and into my car. Sounds much like your one.
Still no replies from Mr Hellenbrand? He obviously doesn't want your money!! Speak to Bexley Motorworks. I would be suprised if they haven't fitted a carbon airbox to an S50. I think you should also uprate the cams if you go this route.
