  • HELP - VANOS

I started my car this morning and there was initially a loud rattle from the front right hand side (drivers) of the engine, after a few seconds the noise stopped. Could this be a sign that the VANOS is on its way out?

Any advice appreciated and thanks in advance.

Dont worry mate, that could be many things

VANOS noise is generally a grownling on tickover and when the car is revved it will over run slightly.

I had a similar noise to what you are describing and had a BMW technician check it, I cant remember the technical description of what he said but it was not serious.

something to do with the diff or driveshaft I think, mine does not do it since I had my diff changed.

does it also do the same when you switch the ignition off?

If you are worried take it to see a specialist!

I thought I had a vanos fault but it was just a weird noise as well.

My mechanic mate (who's sreiously good) reckons that for £17 parts and a wee bit of labour you should change the filter and bolts every year at service. He reckons it's the bolts that fail and this is a cheap way of insuring it doesn't happen to you. Espcially with BMWs super cheap warranty situation !!

Thanks for the re-assurance guys. It hasn't done it since. Car is due a service soon and I'll get the filter and bolts changed.
