View Full Version : who can give me advice on a set of Golf clubs?
I have started playing after years of not playing and would like to buy a nice set of clubs that suit a beginer but will be good enough as I improve.
I am happy to go second hand if thats the best option?
have been looking on the web at the usual stuff, Nike, Ping, Callaway but do not know where to start?
any help is much appreciated!
Thanks
Lee

Most sets by a big brand (like you list) are pretty good these days, but would say it is important to get a set that suit you, in terms of your swing speed / stance / height etc etc. You don't need to spend a lot, and I wouldn't bother until you really get into it personally !
I would definitely recommed peripheral (edge) weighted clubs (helps get ball in the air) - most beginners / mid level clubs will be like this (unlike the "blades" pros tend to use)
I'd suggest you find a good PGA qualified pro - either recommended by someone or you could try one off the site below. I'd also say get some lessons as it's key to get the fundamentals of the setup and swing correct !

I have an old mate that is one of the Pros at this place, could put you in touch if you were interested (he lives in Wokingham).

I just wish I had more time to play - only had two rounds in Spain this year.

Glad to hear you're picking up the game again - did the Ryder Cup inspire you?!
When I started learning, I bought a full set including woods for about £350 which was on offer in the pro shop at my local club. Can't remember the make now (they weren't one of the major brands) but they got my handicap down to the low 20s without me feeling the need to spend any serious money. I then bought a set of Clevelands once I knew what I wanted out of a set of clubs (or was consistent enough to notice the difference between makes).
Having said all that, golf is one of those games where you can't help spending money on bits of 'kit'. If you're looking for main brands, I would go with Callaway Big Bertha's as they are specifically designed for high handicappers - oversized club face, cavity backed and a large forgiving sweet spot. Don't whatever you do buy graphite shafts.
We should organise a Z3M London golf game soon - Hoebridge (nr Woking) is normally pretty good.
Chris.

Hi Lee,
Just to confuse you further, club choice is as individual a preference as your swing. All golfers in this house, from a 2, 6 and 11 handicapper, we all use different clubs, Ping, Mizuno and Titleist. Try a few at your local golf club,Pros tend to be really hrlpful if you ask for club selection advice.I have had 2 sets of Titleist obver 13 years and they are great for ME!
Good luck! and I hope you get as much fun as we do from a super, relaxing sport

I got back into it by accident, a neighbour has been hassling me to play a game with him for ages, so finally I borrowed some clubs and played this Sunday, I had a great game and couldnt believe I had ever stopped playing!!
I watched my first bit of the Ryder cup after the game over a pint, great result.
thanks for all of your advice guys, I think as suggested I will visit a somewhere I can get a feel for the clubs.
my budget is £3-400 and I found some pretty good deals here

did not realise we had so many golfers on here! we should definitely organise a game!
I was pleased to see I can get 2 sets of clubs in the MC :!:

I'm always up for a round lee.............in fact multiple, 1 on the course and several in the bar
On a serious note, come and hit a few balls down at the range just round the corner from me. I was in the same boat recently and went for some steel shafted Calloway BB's second hand from Direct Golf for £190

E-bay is a great place to pick up second hand clubs too. I've bought a load for me and Mrs H from there over the years for a bargain price if you know exactly what you're looking for.

Hi Lee,
Beware! this is a game that can take over your entire life and free time. And I know you can fit 4 sets of golf clubs in the MC boot, so no problem when the whole family play! The only place to play golf is here in Scotland, spoilt for choice with great courses in magnificent surroundings, birds in the trees is almost all you hear.An MC golf day could be interesting, good to see that there is a connection between great cars and a great sport, well done the Ryder cup boys, but what was Woosie doing with his left nostril and that bottle of Moet? Obscene!!!

thanks again for all replies, more help needed please!
I have now had a swing with many different sets of iron and played with a few different putters and glad that I did!
I have narrowed it down to:
2nd hand Callaway Big Bethas 04 models - £282
NEW Callaway Big Berthas 06 models - £400
Now I know the majority has said go for used but for the difference in price and the fact that I will know how they have been treated I am so far in favour of the new set.
I have also settled on a lovely Ping putter:

am I making the right choice with the irons?

I would go with the 04 model as I doubt very much that there's a noticeable difference. Spend what you save on buying a nice fat Talyor Made R5 driver off e-bay. 8)

Hi Lee,
go for new, the Callaways I have heard are great to use, and very rewarding on bad shots! As for putters, I cannot go past Scotty Cameron Napa, if you can get one under £200.00 that is.I use a Mizuno MP001 driver, and I find it the best club for ease of use I have ever owned, and my driving is particularly suspect,(well it used to be) all the best
JKE11Y
I have access to a load of brand new Callaway drivers and fairway woods, all new and very cheap
