I personally would not, especially with the 250 excess thing :-x .
Bank it!
no waste of money, per year its a minimum of £1300, if you really want a warranty just get a warranty direct one like Rags, thats only £400!
we shall see if thats even worth it!

come on think positive!
Had the same decision as you i would not bother. Its hardly a warranty with a £250 excess! piss take IMO

It's a personal thing, a lot depends on why you feel you need a warranty, is it for peace of mind, is it because your car has done high mileage and you are worried that things are going to go wrong soon. are you concerned about re-sale value without warranty.
Remember, you will be tied to dealers for your servicing, ( extra costs ), the re-sale value of your car will hardly be affected, especially if you trade it in, if a private buyer is unsure then he can have a very comprehensive check done by BMW before buying.
Put your money in the bank, get the car serviced by a good inde, ( more money in the bank ), and treat yourself to some mods. when you find that you still have the money there at the end of the year.
Mine runs out the end of this month, I am having a couple of small things done before it runs out, then they are doing the MOT on it for me to see if they can find any other problems, then my money is going into the bank, ( mine, not theirs ).
But as I said it is a personal thing.

I don't think you are tied to BMW servicing. My indy tells me that as long as the mechanic is vat registered and uses genuine parts the EW is still valid.
Has anyone got experience on claiming on the non-BMW warranties? I'm told they can be a nightmare and will never work out in your favour. IIRC they don't always allow for new genuine parts and certain labour costs etc etc?
My EW is due in April and being as I've only just bought the car (and its mint) I'm very nervous to not renew. My indy is great but that doesn't help me if something goes pop.
Mags
Mags,
You just have to weigh it all up.
If you extend the warranty it is £1050 plus £250 excess - so you are £1300 down before you have claimed.
In the real world of Indy costs per hour, you can get a lot of work done for the price of a warranty.
It amazes me how people always justify their warranty with the amount that they 'avoided paying'.
Take for example a chap I know who has a CSL - he claimed for a bobbled steering wheel, a wheel bearing and a few other mundane items last year- the costs incurred(using the EW)were more than the outlay of the warranty. BUT, these items could have been fixed for a 1/3 of the cost at an Indy!
The problem with dealers is the replace as opposed to repair which drives the costs up.
I took out a Warranty Direct policy which was £400 and covered the Vanos as I felt the equivalent of £35 a month was piece of mind and hopefully I will not have to claim and if I do, then it will be money well spent!
Mags, you are correct, there are cases where third party non BMW warranties have been reluctant to pay out for what would appear to be legitimate warranty work which is covered on their inclusions. However, have you ever tried claiming with BMW? It is still a real ball ache.
I had an e46 m3 and the mirror housing bubbled up, on a 4yr old car! Surely that would be a certain warranty success.
Anyway, quietly confident I would get a result, they declined and told me 'trim' is not covered.
I argued and they agreed to pay half and get half as goodwill.
I didn't bother in the end.

After much deliberation I decided in November not to renew. I saw the warranty before as a reasonable insurance policy but I did not abuse it - not a claim in 2 years, but at the new cost it is not justified.

There is always confusion over this. My understanding is that manufacturers cannot not tie you to official servicing for your new car warranty (as long as proper manufacturers parts and service schedule are used) but they CAN when you choose to take out an extended. As always though it may come down to individual dealers interpretation.
Yes, very true. I think the guy I bought the car from was planning to use warrant direct as well this year.
I'm going to see my indy in the morning, I'll ask him what he thinks, financially the BMW EW seems a bit of a joke.
When I consider I spent years having an E30 M3 serviced by ML with no warranty and I spend £K's on all sorts of stuff, I must be mad worrying about a newish car.

Well thats its Mags, despite the costs of servicing at Munich Legends, its actually better value and cheaper than a stealer!

Guys,
Just to clear things up on the subject of servicing, this is taken straight from the booklet you get when renewing the warranty, " All service work must be carried out by an Authorised BMW dealer or BMW service approved workshop using only genuine BMW parts.
Steve.

I think I may be in a minority of one who has bought the new scheme - it'll be a year old in May where I'll confim that it was a waste of money or not ;)

I'm out of warranty now, got my renewal through about a month ago, £1800 odd - tossed it straight in the shredder. I've put £1k past to cover me this year, lets hope she doesn't spin a shell or drop a vanos!
Re Ballache claiming the BMW warranty, I'd noticed increasing EW claim resistance over the last few years. I had some joy recently with a stealer refusing to replace a broken boot lock mechanism (the part that holds the boot shut, not the button) as it was classed as 'trim'.
When I asked them 'If it's trim then if I unbolt it would a copper consider the car still safe to drive?' the warranty administrator saw the fallacy of her argument and got it replaced it FOC.
I'm just glad with an Insp.2 looming after my next oil service I'm not going to be paying stealer rates anymore.
