Hi chaps..i just wanted to know about the compressor which sits in place of a spare wheel??? 1)has anyone used it ?2) does it need any maintanance ?3) if so in what form ?? my car is an s reg....and the thing dosnt look like its ever been touched !!!
They don't require maintenance but check the date on the bottle
if it is that old it will be out of date. And the good news is they don't
supply them anymore. You have to buy the compressor for the E46
at £120 pounds give or take a couple of quid

guys, does anyone have a pic of what the compressor looks like as I just checked my boot and I don't think I have one
It's sat in the right rear corner of the boot; you need to remove the corner trim panel (three big plastic turn-screws).

I've got the old one in place and have bought a standard one from Halfords just in case the old one doesn't work.

After checking my origanal compressor etc.......i found that the foam (blue bottle) cylinder was out of date...and yup BMW in their wisdom have changed the whole system ! no longer available ! yup new style compressor.and aditional foam..aprox £160...so gonna keep the origanal in place..and hopefully not use it..then gonna buy a couple of cans from halfords etc....thanks for your help !

Swine! I was bidding on that! :-) Forgot about it at the crucial moment and lost....... Aaah well...
My M mobility kit obviously got lost in the sands of time. Guy who sold me the car slipped in a can of Holts Tyre Weld :-) LOL. Probably no more or less useful! A bit like airline security - just hope you don't need it eh?!

Melvin, did you buy a one specific to ZMC or a general one, I had a look myself this evening and I can only see ones for Mini's. What was the item description of the one you bought?

If it's the one I was looking at it was an original M Mobility Kit for M Roadsters/Coupes. They don't come up very often and a lot of people seem to have 'lost' them. They're big and heavy. I'm happy with my can of tyre weld and an AA card!!
The original 'goo' BMW supplied also eats through wheels like something off Alien - best not used if at all possible. May be worth having in order to 'complete' the car, but the general consensus seems to be, if you get a flat - ring for a tow! :-)

That's the current one. I think the one you want will be an older version, only made for about the duration of the M Coupe. Don't ask me what the difference is! If you want to pass it off as original, you would obviously want the older version :-) I've seen a few change hands in the bimmerforums but just the one on ebay. I gave up.
Think you might struggle to get that one ground shipped from the states too!!..... (they wont fly these things - compressed gas...)

The one i bought was just called BmW mobility kit..it does not have the handle on the bag,,but is suitable for all BMW's that dont have a spare..the only difference i can see is that the sealant does not come in a plastic housing !! also your right about the sealant rotting alloys "any sealant" when i had a repair done the tyre chaps thouroghly washed my wheel and tyre! i guess thats why theres gloves in the kit !

I'm going to keep my old mobility kit for the time being (keeping the car as original as possible) and get one of these and some tye gunk. Will also be useful for the other cars:
Digital 12v compressor (http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/DIGITAL-RING-AIR-COMPRESSOR-12V-DC-CAR-TYRE-GAUGE-NEW_W0QQitemZ300212392569QQihZ020QQcategoryZ30906Q QssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem)

I had to use my mobility kit at the weekend following a 100mph tyre blow out in France....It didn't work. For two reasons:
1) The foam seemed to have settled / gone off, didn't expand or solidify. (I think it is the original, 9 years)
2) After using it I discovered most of the inner sidewall was nothing short of annihilated. (It was quite dark so I didn't spot it at first)
I'll probably keep the unit in the car for the compressor functionality but keep a halfords foam can also.

This is exactly why I have gone the space saver wheel route. I had the same thing happen in Italy two years ago, in my company car which fortunately came with a space saver. I got ripped off for the new tyre in Italy. £100 dearer than the UK and that was with a claimed 30% discount.
