View Full Version : Rust on a ZM coupe
Hi,
a quick question, a zmc im considering going to look at apparently has mild rust appearing on the back archs. Now rust is my number one hate as you can never truly get rid of it unless you cut it out.
I really want one with zero rust or any sign of it. Is this a common occurance on a zmc?

I've not seen rust on arches before on a Z3, but rust isn't uncommon to form around spot welds on BMWs of this age, particularly under the bonnet (though it tends not to spread very far, more a bit of bubbling around the weld).
Is it actually on the outer body panel, or the arch "seam/lip"? as they have a rough/bubbly appearance on the inside lip which is normal I think. It's normally the same kind of finish on the underside of the sills and the front of the arch/wing that leads down to meet the arch liner. I would avoid a car that is showing signs of rust on the body panel itself though.
i have it on mine, you can only see if it you look just in front of the rear wheel.
im gonna sort mine out with some anti rust and get it painted the next time i have something done
rust sounds bad but its not, i had it on my old one too, on the front sills

There is also some on mine again on the rear arch about the size of a pound coin. Like Ben I will get sort next time I have some work done on the body.

After I got sideswiped on the rear nearside wheelarch I decided to remove wheel and the arch liner bolt to check behind liner,I found that the metalwork at cill level was rusting ,not seen with liner in place.
I then did the same check on the offside, and found much worse condition in the metal arch lip and cill.I scraped off all signs and coated ++ with Kurust.Found a reasonable match in hammerite and many coats later it looked good.I think the offside was much worse than near, which I also treated.
I dont like the non fit between the liner and metal inner arch lip, water and stones get behind liner and some stones were trapped, which could cause the coating to peel off.Well worth a check and a simple DIY job.
Thanks for the replies everyone.... salt eh
Just wanted to know what was acceptable when looking..
