View Full Version : Inspection 2
So I'm going to need an Inspection 2 service in the next few months and was wondering what sort of prices people have paid (main dealer or indy) & did they do the valve clearances. So far I seem to have discovered that the very cheap indy prices may not have included doing the valves. I know this has been covered before but things change with time...
The thing with the valve clearances is that even though it's specififed on both an Insp I and Insp II it is a time consuming job to do to strip the top of the head and measure each lobe clearance (and also have to have the engine stone cold) and it usually results in them not requiring adjustment anyway (they shouldn't need doing as often as the service schedule suggests IMO, unless BMW thought the something wears very quickly in the valvetrain). I think it is easier to do on the S54 engine though as the rockers are a different design.
I did mine and found only about 5 tolerances were out but it wasn't by very much. I would say this is along the same lines as the throttle bodies (adjustment is also part of Insp II) and I can't see this being necessary either as these things shouldn't go out of adjustment for over 100,000 miles IMO.

Irrelevant of price (although I would say about £600 from an Indy is about right) the question is do the garage ask for your car the night before (without prompt)? If they do IMO they are doing value clearances (and doing them right)

This seems an appropriate time to clarify something! Before buying the MC I looked into servicing costs. I was quoted estimate prices by a few places, some of which quoted prices for inspections I, II and III. There's not much talk of inspection III on t'web and it doesn't appear in my service book - am I right in assuming some places refer to an oil service as inspection I and the inspection I as inspection II etc? Or is there actually an official inspection III? Thanks!

III to my knowledge does not exist, oil, I and II are relevant for an M coupe

Would it be worth sticking a thread with the approx costs for servicing / popular work (like Vanos)?
Eg. Oil Service £150 BMW / £100 indie?
Inspection 1 £…. / £…..
Just an idea as it would certainly help us noobs
OK so far for an inspection II
K & M autotecknic maidenhead £611 all in incl valve clearances.
Sytners sunningdale £950 incl 4+ discount incl valve clearances.
munich motors £515 NOT incl valve clearances.
From the guy who designed the engine:
"As there is no hydraulic maintenance of valve clearance, it does have to be inspected periodically. Lead engine engineer Helmut Himmel asserts that it is unlikely that clearance will ever require adjustment, but if so it is done with shims (tiny metal discs of various thickness) without removing the camshafts."
how much have munich said it will be for the valve clearances?

couldn't give me a price as it would vary depending on what needs doing apparantly !

Thanks but its a bit far as you need to leave the car over night so would be difficult with the distance aspect. I think I'm going to go with K & M there seems to be a lot of very positive feedback from their customers.

HOW ?!?!?!? which dealership was this ? I want that !
Main reasons I would never use a BMW dealer are because for what you pay your getting a very pricey oil change but, worse, because they pluck these figures out of thin air. It's like dealing with insurance companies!!!

All the protests of WE are being ripped off means nothing if YOU continue to pay the crazy Dealer prices. The dealers are BLACKMAILED in spending Millions on their premises or they will lose their franchise,s---believe me!!.So YOU are the only way to meet their targets to make enough to pay off the banks to save their biz.
The UK world of make believe is a brainwash that says you must have a dealer stamp in your book, or the value of your P & J is worthless---Why is it that its the dealer network that promotes this myth? the ex-employees of dealerships who start their own service companies are as competant as are the official dealers --the cowboys are soon out of biz.
The owners who pay £120-180 for a oil change at the dealer and are content cos the stamp says dealer and not indy @ £ 80+ own oil, need to wake up or shut up.
This website advises all ZZZs on the real world of owners experience, If you dont want to waste £££££s YOU have to pay attention.Just ask the European ZZZZzzzsss.

I do agree with you John... for cars over 10 years old and over 60k. However, lower mile younger cars will get good will if anything goes wrong even out of warranty. After those points a good cheap indy is well worth it if you have one near by.

Or if you have a warranty to maintain.
It is a total rip off & I doubt anyone will disagree with what ZZZEMMCO is saying, but if you need / choose to go to a main dealer it would be nice to see some consistancy in their pricing.

How much oil does it take, the M Coupe?? I would have thought £40 for oil and to get a BMW stamp in your book is pretty good?
But I do agree, I would rather see someone has changed their oil along with bushes, etc. etc. regularly at an indy than just done enough to get stamps in the book.

As a new owner (well sort of...1 year) it's coming up to my 1st inspection 2.
I've been quoted £500 +vat from munich legends and £480+vat from Bexley Motor Works, both including valave clearences (overnight).
Seems about right? Or has anyone got a better deal from them?
Cheers

Both those prices seem quite reasonable.
My last Inspection II (Apr 08) cost £198.00 for labour plus filters, plugs, oil - £350 all up.
Just had rear brake caliper, discs, pads replaced - £60 labour.
Thes are fair prices from a very good Indy - Emtec of Salisbury.

As I have replied in another post. These guys are very close to you in Reading. They are two Cooper Reading mechanics that have left to set up their own business in Sindlesham, Reading callled Berkshire Motor Works (BMW). One was a technician and the other a Senior Technician. I not used them yet but I have been told they are very good by the people I know at Cooper. When it comes to an Inspection 1 or 11, I will probably go with them.
They quote they charge 50% less that a main dealer. Might be worth a try.
Their link is here.

I think I might try these guys as they are about 1.5 miles from my house and I can walk home
£614 for an Insp 2 incl valve clearance.
I've booked it in for next week. I quizzed them on lots of details without leading them and they seemed to know what they were talking about. Insisted on having the car the day before, knew the right oil to use, etc etc so I felt confident enough to leave the car with them.
I'll report back on my findings.

I did a little shopping around in with the BMW dealers within 30 miles of me:
Henry Bros Glasgow: Inspection 1 £490 inc
Douglas Park Hamilton: Inspection 1 £650 inc / Inspection 2 £750 inc – with free MOT voucher.
Harry Fairbairn Glasgow – Inspection 1 £578.98
I’m surprised at the Inspection 2 price from a Main Dealer, seems pretty reasonable considering & an MOT is £50 now too.

I've just booked mine in at Munich Legends. £550 + vat compared to £850 and £900 from my local Coopers dealers.
All 3 sounded knowledgable (need the car overnight etc) but Munich Legends price and the fact that the guy I spoke to sounded very friendly without any hint of arrogance won them my custom.
I don't have a warranty to maintain and I'm not too keen on keeping the car in the main dealer network after their last attempt to get cash from me, and the fact that the replacement VANOS they fitted when Dale owned the car lasted just 6 months into my ownership before needing £££s spent.
I've had good experience with specialists on my previous car so I'm happy to go down that route with the ZMC.

All, I had an Inspection 2, MOT and a repair to my rear wiper at Prestige German Motors £520 all in.
I have a buyer for my car and now in the process of buying a steel grey 996 turb with full PSH, I will miss the coupe though.

Just been ringing round for some Insp 1 prices:
BMW North Oxford - £588.08 inc VAT
Sytner High Wycombe - £730 inc VAT
Cotswold BMW (Cheltenham) - didn't return my call.
Chap I spoke to at North Oxford told me unprompted that it had to be in the night before to do valve clearances, so have booked them with them. I let them off the fact that when I called yesterday they quoted me £620... had them double check the lower price, so we'll see what they try to charge me when the time comes.

Paul---Its Only the Inspection 2 service that SUPPOSEDLY needs the valve clearances checked--so the day before is the usual Con--yet only 2 out of 100 cars needed NEW shims--and they are not stocked in dealers cos Nobody will know what sizes to keep--so if BMW UK dont have the correct sizes on the shelf--its a Munich delivery---YET your car is ready Sir!! all within the 2 days!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! What service??? Yes-WHAT Service????
You are just 20 mins from Junct 4 M40---Munich Motors--Clive says it like it is--Supply your own Edge and its a ££££££s pleasure to have a Professional service by an anorak who checks ALL the items that are NOT on the check list.

Interesting... h4pry has asked BMW GB on this one in the past and they say it's recommend on both 1 and 2 (see http://www.z3mcoupe.com/forum/showthread.php?t=6729).
My car's been down to Munich Motors the last few times and I've had good service there, but it's a two hour round trip, which I have to do twice, whereas North Oxford are a 3 min drive from my front door, so I thought I'd take the lazy option this time.
