Last monday my car went to Cooper Tunbridge Wells for an inspection 1. They completed the work within 5 hours of which I was very suprised at. Apparently the valve clearances had been checked.
As the prices for this work often gets asked I thought I post up the invoice as it might be of some use for informational purposes and price indication for south east dealers.

Invoice also indicates that they used 0W30 oil. I questioned this and they responded that BMW UK still stipulate that this grade is to be used on the S50 B32.
Good post - thats not a bad price from a dealer. I've been quoted £850 +

Aren't valve clearances only checked on an insp2? Not a bad price from a stealer I guess, I never knew they used that grade oil though.

I must check my invoice, as when I asked Cooper the said that they had used 10W60 into my S50! Did you leave the car overnight? I did, when they said they could do the valve clearances in a day, as I was a bit sceptical. Of course, who's to tell whether they ever actually do it ...
Jez
PS Prices look about the same as mine - I had extras in brake fluid plus the fixing of the engine screw holes.
PPS They didn't like your steering wheel either :-)

For that price it should have been an Isp II I reckon... had a quote from BMW for one on my Coupe and it was around that figure. Valve clearences are also only done on Isp II... maybe they did that instead of an Isp I as you thought?

I would say that is definitely insp1 he has had done as I also thought that aswell as valve clearances, the spark plugs are replaced on an insp2.

Guys, the BMW system has generated the invoice as an Inspection 1. That is what work was completed.
To confirm I have just called BMW GB. They have confirmed that it's recommend that VC's are checked on inspection 1 and 2.

What is the castrol code on the bottom of your invoice?

I've been quoted £1400 for an Insp II from main dealer

Got the prices I was quoted by Cotswold BMW last October for servicing:
Oil Service - £124.59 inc.
Insp I - £580.79 inc.
Insp II - £776.39 inc.
I ended up using a local Bosch place that does a few other M Coupes for an Insp II which ran to about £450... though have just had an Oil Service done there and paid £175 for it so wish I'd looked at these prices again!!

Thats waaaaay less than the dealers in my area will do it for ! damn it.
I would recommend Bexley Motorworks
Paid 250 GBP + VAT labour for inspection II on S50 (had purchased the oil and the filters somewhere else) and they did great job. Have no idea how much they would charge for everything but definitely less than the main stealer and having seen the number of m coupes there looks like they know what they are doing.

They quoted me £470 for an Insp 1, which compares to the £700 from the stealer that H4pry and I have both used (boot floor protection, for me!). It's also a lot less convenient for me than Cooper.

and this is the reason that I'm gonna stick with the FBMWSH on my car. If those welds go, I'm not paying a penny!

They put 10W60 into mine. Code was OIL7 (whereas, yours says OIL1). Strange ...

I can't see how could BMW argue how someone else doing an oil change could make the rear body of the car break?

How the hell can they do the valves when the car is only in for one day? The engine has to have been off overnight as the valves have to be adjusted when cold.

My experience too means they need the car overnight. My last ins 1 at the bmw main dealer was in the 500s with ins 2 in the 600s.
The only possible excuse could be they have the car from first thing and do the clearances at the end of the day when the engine is cold. I suspect most dealers miss this part out as it seems ridiculous to check them every Inspection as their's a lot of labour to strip the top end, check them, and realise probably none need adjusting!

I know this happens, however if you have paid for the work to be done.....

Oh, I completely agree. I just don't trust anyone enough to think that they wouldn't try to wriggle out of it if the car doesn't have FBMWSH. Also, my next one is an Ins 2 :(

Yea I know but I bet they're "encouraged" to do the job as quickly as they can, give it a quick look over, swap the oil and filter (total cost to them about £20) and it's a money making machine. I just can't see them "setting up" the throttle bodies either - probably more like they'll open the throttle and check they all move about the same.

I think this depends on which mechanic you get, I know for a fact if my mate (who is a BMW tech) works on any car he does the job 100% every time. However some other mechanics don't but he said that they usually get fired after a while as they are usually also not the best mechanics as they don't take pride in their work.

So-all you believers in the Gospel of Dealers stamps--ask what size Shims are used on your prides valves----chances are they dont know what a shim is for--SO my friend tells me!

Good point, if they charge you for shims, ask for your old ones back; chances are if they do change the shims they'll be from old stock and your old ones would go back in a shim set.

Interesting point on the dealer stamps - I'm looking to see how many out of dealer cars have their boot floors fixed for free.

My boot floor failed spectacularly and BMW fixed everything for free (inc. courtesy car) - my lack of a FBMWSH was never mentioned at all.
It would perhaps be different for a modded car but for a standard car I don't think the FBMWSH makes much different - the 'off the record' impression I got from BMW was that they recognised that they should have done a recall but didn't and as a result are happy to fix for free as and when they fail.
YMMV and this will presumably change as our cars get older, although mine was 9 years old at time of failure.

Perhaps you could share some of this info with Cragg in the stick'd thread within the technical section?

The official answer is that the thicker variety is supposed to be applied to the S54.
I wouldn't worry about it as many experienced S50 owners swear by 10w60.

But it's a bit rubbish non-the-less that they've put in oil into my car that is not what they recommend themselves.

I've got an inspection 1 due now.
Local dealer couldnt give me a price as their system was down so for fun rang a dealer in n/london.
'about £1,200 I think' was his answer.
Later revised to £999.98.
That is insane is it not?

Paid 550 for my last one at a dealer.
Oil service last week was a reasonable 150, changed vanos filter and bolts for an extra 40. I was quite chuffed.

NOW you All know why dealer service is mega £££ss.They invented parliaments MP,s expence rip off system--YOU know it makes sense--for THEM.
If you have an Indi that is honest, he will tell you that an inspection 2 not only requires a cold engine--overnight--so that they can measure the valve gaps/whatever cold and if shims are required due to wear--they have to order from BMW UK, this takes time--so do you think that 99% of those charged for this, have perfect clearance all in a day?
Perhaps the financial climate may make dealers think twice, but Dont count on it.

Broccers, where did you get your recent work done? All the dealers around this part of the country dont have any bolts in stock and say they are on back order from Germany with no known date for supply.

Funny you should ask that today as I've just had them fitted - been on back order since I had the oil service recently. 30 - 45 min do it while you wait job.

Booked in for an Inspection 2 at Prestige on Friday - dropping the car off on Thursday so expecting valve clearances to be checked..
Quoted £430+vat
also asked for price of Inspection 1 - £340+vat
Presuming the difference is spark plugs, final drive oil replacement and intake air filter (wonder if they'll do this as have Simota fitted?)
