Hi

I ned to replace the rear tyres - and just for a change this post is not a question about which brand to use. I have to leave the car in storage for six months, during which time it will only be moved a few yards around the warehouse to get other cars in/out. In six months time I will be looking for work again, so I want to have the car as free from the need to spend $$ as possible.

Should I replace the tyres now, and ask the storage guy to roll it around once a week; or
Buy the tyres now, store them in the back of the car, and have them fitted in six months when the car is to be driven again? I have read somewhere that it is always best to buy fresh tyres rather than 'old' ones.

I have never had tyres I already owned just fitted before - do all tyre shops do that for you?

Oh, and the obvious answer - why not just put the money aside now and do it all in six months? I suspect the married guys on the forum know the answer to that........

Any advice appreciated.

The tyres will be fine in six months that are already on or you could fit the new ones now or later; pump them up to 45psi and make sure the car is moved a little every week or so so that it rests on a different part of the tyre.

Even if they do "flat spot" a little it'd probably be a case of running it round slowly for a few miles (I find my car does this after only a day or two sat in the garage; if I go straight on the motorway 1/2mile from my house then the wheels feel unbalanced, but if I run round on roads for a few miles first then go on the motorway it's fine).

My cars are taken off road 6 months of the year and on low profile tyres they do flat-spot which reveals itself at about 50-60mph which judder.
My options are
a) have old set to stand on over winter storage or
b) buy some wheel 'shoes' which are shaped like the tyre so keep their shape.
I have yet to discuss the latter with John Drake ( zymol retailler/ johns models) so will keep you posted on their reputation but could be 'our' answer.

I have now contacted John Drake who sells the tyre shoes at £125.00 if anyone interested.
