Had my new extinguisher and mounting parts (just under £50 all-in new from dealer) waiting to go on, but after checking just now, fitting is not as straight forward as on my previous BMWs.

The mounting area on the seat frame is hidden behind the actual covering of the seat (the synthetic material that starts just as the leather finishes at the front of the seat).

I assume I have found the right spots by feel alone - there are two notch-holes I can make out under the material, that align perfectly with the mounting bracket I have - hence I assume these to be the mounting points.

This would appear to suggest I need to cut through just to fit the mounting bracket... I really need to get the seat out of the car for a proper look to see if there is another way, as I really don't want to cut anything.

So I request - has anybody got a factory-fitted fire extinguisher that they can post up pictures of please? Particularly showing the mounting bracket and how it is mounted onto the seat.

Or has anyone successfully retrofitted an extinguisher, and how did you do it? Did you need to cut?

I have found in my previous BMW that cars that were not specced with a fire extinguisher from new often had to have minor modifications done. For example, in my Clubsport the holes were there for the bracket, but were not tapped for bolts. This meant I had to remove the seat and tap them myself. I assume the Z3 may need similar modding.

Note the bracket itself - the mounting element is a bar with two bolt threads on at either end - these are what line up perfectly with the notches/holes I can feel in the seat frame.

And this is how I assume it should be mounted;

I conclude that the bar with the bolt threads either end, needs to be mounted behind the seat material, behind the holes I can feel in the seat frame. The bolts will then come through the holes I can feel, and then two small holes must be made in the material for them to come through.

Then the mounting plate itself can be fitted on the bolts, and and the nuts tightened to complete the bracket install. However getting the bar behind the material would require the covering to be actually be unfastened and removed at the front... See the problem?

Any input in the way of pictures or experience to clarify this would be greatly appreciated. :thumb:

Thanks,

Keith

Good man Ash. That would be great. Please try to get some clear images specifically of the mounting to the seat... That's what I need to know.

Thank you mate ;)

Factory fitting sounds interesting. I don't recall fire extinguishers being offered as part of the optional safety equipment nor on the options list for the S50 when I ordered mine from new.

So I'd be interested in seeing the pictures.
I had one fitted to my s50 in 1999, it was not listed as a option but was available from the z3 accessory brochure.

Hope these help Keith. I assumed mine was factory fitted but after a closer look mine's not even fitted straight so i reckon i got that a bit wrong!

Perfect Ashley! That confirms exactly how and where I though it is mounted. Thanks mate

I scribbled this (as pictures are easier than describing) to illustrate how I presume it is fitted.

By all accounts the material can be unclipped underneath the seat to allow the mounting plate to be fitted in place.

Holes will have to be made in the seat material to allow the bolts of the plate to come through.
