  • Viscous fan lodged in radiator shroud

After a throughly pleasant drive out to the Haynes Breakfast Club car meet disaster struck.

I was near home when I started to hear a grumble from the engine when undercoat and at idle. It sounded as though the engine was running in 5 cylinders or as if the Vanos was noisy.

I limped the car home and popped the bonnet, I found that the viscous fan was lod edged into the radiator shroud. The fan blade had a 2cm gouge where it had hit the surround at force. My first thoughts were WTF!!!!

I managed to free the fan and I clipped the shroud back in place.

I restarted the engine and there was a slight whine from the fan area. I blipped the throttle a few times and the fan began to clatter against the shroud.

Does anyone have experience of what is wrong and/or what is required to rectify this? I changed the fan about 18months ago as it only had 5 blades on it.

Such a shame as the car has just come back from a service and having e valve clearances done and is/was running beautifully.

    Thanks in advance.

    Chris

I suspect that your water pump has had it. Defo get it changed right away. Might not feel like it but you're lucky that the fan hasn't gone through the rad

Don't run the car anymore until you've had the water pump checked. Did you notice any rise in temperature?
I chap I know with an E36 M3 with the same engine as our S50 engined MCs suffered the identical symptoms with the fan displaced into the fan shroud. I actually saw the car in this state as I was following behind him when he pulled up. He got the car recovered to the garage he uses for his maintenance work, turns out it was a seized water pump.

        Cheers guys

I'll go and check the play in the water pump now. we've literally just had the water pump replaced on the wife's E91.

Another possibility, I read of on other forums is that the engine/gearbox mounts have had it allowing the engine to rock and for the fan to hit the shroud.

It's proving to be an expensive month for the coupe.

Another reason not to run that stupid fan! The only good thing it's for is to check for play in the water pump shaft it hangs off!

And I wonder without it fitted, does the water pump bearing have a much easier time without that big wheel spinning off it?

Ok, been out there today and 'yes' there there is play in the water pump.

My local BMW Indy has quoted £160 to replace.

As people have said, thank the Lord that it didn't hit the rad.

totally agree with you on that..as soon as that fan becomes slightly unbalanced its going to wear the pump out at a rate of knots.

Water pump replaced by the Indy but it was a lot dearer than £160. M Tax strikes again! It's now running like a peach and I'm back in love with it.

I'm starting to get quotes for a paint job. If anyone can recommend a paint shop near Bournemouth It'd be much appreciated.

Forgot to mention, the Indy only wanted to fit genuine BMW hence the price hike I guess. I trust the mechanic as he's worked on all my BMW's over the years.

Ross Packard Paintwork in New Milton, have used them for the MC and other BMWs over the years, see www.ross-packard.co.uk

Not cheap but top work, highly recommended.
