I bought a new MAF (chasing an issue I had a few years ago), got it off ebay (Bosch Air Flow Meter 0280217806 BMW M3 E36 Z3) for around £165.00, so not too bad. However it didn't fix my issue!

As an aside I had low torque/throttle response and it turned out to be a faulty knock sensor as the ecu was holding back timing which affected torque quite a bit.

+1. I cleaned the MAF on my m5 with a specialist MAF cleaner spray. You do have to be careful not to damage it but there's no need to get too close to the hot wire, so the risk is low as Dave says.

But FWIW I'd pursue easier and cheaper routes first. I've owned more than one M Car that has benefitted from a new TPS.

Yes tried a new TPS but made no difference, the coupe is nearly 19 years old so may just bite the bullet and treat it to a new set of coils

FWIW this issue has now resolved itself.

          Work done:
          - Fuel Filter
          - Spark Plugs
