  • Replicating S54 shadow chrome wheel finish

    Hi guys,

I want to get my genuine never painted S54 shadow chrome wheels refinished at some point in the future. I have some concerns though.

The finish on the wheels is the factory finish they have never been refurbished and are in desperate need mainly due to corrosion. The finish in the wheels with less corrosion(rears) is very good and consistent. The colour is correct as well as they are factory finish.

    I have seen numerous refurbished s54 wheels and none are quite right. They normally get one or both of the following things wrong;

    1) Colour - the majority are done too dark I'm.
    2) Patchy finish - perhaps it is something to do with the chrome paint process but across the wheel if you look closely the finish is not consistent.

So has anyone got any ideas as to who finished the Oem wheels. For obvious reasons it would be good to use them, although I'm well aware they may not be interested.

Alternatively has anyone had them refinished by someone that matches the Oem finish especially regarding point 1 and 2 above.

    Thanks,

    Jon

I used auto paint specialist recently to get some under bonnet paint for the MC. They had a device that was placed on the existing paint and "read" the colour. This data was used to produce a can of touch up that is a perfect match for the original. With your unrefurbished wheels, same may be possible.

That said, had my shadow chrome wheels refurbished a few years ago and they matched the factory finish without difficulty.

        Ian,

Who did them for you as you are fairly local to me.

        Dave,

Yes I knew there would be a major problem buying them new so I ruled that out early on. There is a bad expression in the spares market "spares....who cares"

        Thanks

            Jon,

            I used Auto Wheels Ltd, Droxford, Hampshire SO32 3QY (01489 877903).

Bit out in the sticks, but they provided a low cost curtesy car and I left my car with them for a few days.

Cost was £360 inc VAT (4 wheels) in March 2012 and they did a fine job. There are likely cheaper options but this is where people sometimes go wrong, you generally get what you pay for IMO.

I think by having all four rims done at the same time is good,as most problems seem to be in matching an existing rim,why not contact Indy on here...he seems to be the man around rims...
