  • M Coupes - Licensed / SORN

This may already be on the forum somewhere, so apologies if I've missed it.

I was having a bit of 'downtime' at work and discovered that the DVLA publishes stats on all cars on the road / SORN by a range of variables e.g. make & model, body type, engine size, year of manufacture, year of registration etc etc. Obviously I was keen to see what the M Coupe numbers were like 15+ years after being introduced.

    The summary info is here:
    https://www.howmanyleft.co.uk/vehicle/bmw_m_coupe#!tax

    and the detailed info here:
    https://www.gov.uk/government/statis...#table-veh0120

and now for the bit you've all been waiting for .... the numbers of licensed / SORN Coupes are:

    S50 - 308 / 98

    S54 - 79 / 23

    update

Just to point out, those figures are as at April 2014 and updated annually.

From the summary info (updated quarterly), it seems there are now 388 / 108 M Coupes but no way to distinguish between S50s and S54s.

That does mean there are 13 less SORN since last April but only 1 that's made it back on the road...

Unless it's an error, it says htere was 1 new registration as late as 2006? Wonder if there really is an 06 plate about!

Interesting that only 3/4 are actually licensed... of which a large proportion probably don't see much road other than high days and holidays.... no wonder the spotted thread is a little thin on the ground!

Less than half of UK RHD M Coupes left

Figures from how many left as of Q1 2017
            Taxed 310 Sorn 169 total 479

            RHD European cars built
            S50 821
            S54 165
            Total 986

            Percentage survived 48.6 %
Percentage left that were taxed in Q1 65%
Percentage of total built still taxed in Q1 2017 31%

The figures may also include LHD cars imported into the U.K. There are currently at least 2 LHD advertised for sale that are registered in the U.K.

There is also one shown as a diesel with engine size of 2900 - 2999
And 2 petrol shown with engine size of 3000 to 3099????
Brining the total down to a maximum of 474 left.

If DVLA can register a diesel as a M coupe I wonder how many M3 Coupe's were registered as M Coupe's

Should the percentage left be based on the peak number registered in the UK at 570? If so the survival rat is pretty high!

Unless there were 416 written off/ exported before 2002 the figures that are regularly quoted of 821 S50's & 165 S54's cannot be correct. Making these cars a lot rarer than we think.
