"although note how it goes back in for refitting - it has a lip that slides between two other pieces of the engine higher up."

yes with the help of Keiths pictures - very difficult to see how they fit when working underneath when car is on axle stands.

I always found it was easier to fit the parts together before offering them up for fitment!

It's essentially the oil cooler duct, so the top part sits between the radiator and the oil cooler, it just kind of sits in there but is screwed to that bottom part which is of course screws to the bumper. As Kwoffa says easiest to fit them in one piece otherwise the top part is just loose.

still confused - does the part circled go up and tuck behind the oil cooler ?

No. It's an UNDERtray. Have a look under your car.

its off the car otherwise I wouldnt need to ask.

Keith's picture looks like it (the smaller wing) tucks up behind the oil cooler

Here are 2 photos taken from the underside of the part to give you a better idea. As you can see from the inverse wing profile of this part, this will make the air flow faster beneath the lowest point and the road which will create an area of low pressure beneath the front of the car and help create some downforce at speed, especially if there is some rake on the car.

Do you need any photos of the part on the car taken from the underside? Believe it or not, the 1:18 UT model shows this part very well.

I fully understand how the undertray fits as a whole its the location of the upper part that I am asking, the part circled

Dave, join it all together, start bolting it up from the rear first and it will become evident as to where it all goes...it really does all sit quite neatly, with no tension on any of the parts its a while since i had the lot off,but i do remember it being obviouse once offered up..
