  • changing the diff oil

    guys

just after some feedback on oil choices for the LSD

    opie says castrol 75w - 140

    anyone any experiences?

    thanks

Yep - Got 2 litres of Castrol SAF-XJ 75w-140 fully synthetic from Opies last year for my S50.

I think one litre comes up short.

Don't forget the FM Booster, if you can find it.

Changed diff oil last summer and had to stick to OEM, since I could not find the FM booster anywhere. BMW sells it already mixed, in 1/2L bottles. 1.5L is enough.

      Also, see this thread:

A quick search results: Friction Modifier!

Does it make a big difference ?

i think bmw started putting it in the E46 M3's after many complaints of whirring/grinding noises from the diff etc.

Sounds more like a sound damper than a friction modifier ;)

Jack the car up, on the lower part of the cover panel there is a large allen key bolt, undo that and the old fluid will drain out.
I would replace the bolt or at least the washer at this point to save any future leaks.

Higher up the rear cover there is an identical allen key bolt, undo that and squeeze the new fluid in, you may need a pump depending on the nozzle that comes with your new fluid bottle.

No more than a 30 min job, depending on if you can be bothered it might just be easier to pay half an hours labour for any garage to do it for you

I might be wrong here, but I seem to remember somebody on here suggesting you loosen the upper bolt before draining the oil from the lower bolt hole... just in case you can't get the top bolt out leaving you with an empty diff

The diff oil from BMW is just Castrol, in fact i think it's this one rebranded....

This is what i use, not really needed unless you are doing loads of trackdays......

Interesting about loosening the top bolt first, having just serviced an outboard engine ready for the start of the diving season, you actually fill the gearbox from the bottom hole untill the oil comes out of the top which is why i asked in the first place! i will order new bolts too aswell as the oil from bmw.thanks a lot.
