  • M coupe crashed :-(

Me and my coupe were involved in an accident last week, resulted in us hitting a wall at about 30mph, front nearside took most of the brunt but some damage to offside too, no injuries, no airbags, but the car is not so good !

My insurance took it to local BMW main dealer and according to the tech, the cost to fix indicates a pottential insurance write-off, apart from front radiator, bonnet and light clusters, there is a split around the nearside suspension strut mount, because of this they are not sure of the full extent of the damage, i.e. if there is suspension damage, and it requires a full geometry check that involves removing the engine and most of the front end, most of the cost in the report is laboura and unknowns.
Given that my insurance is likely to write it off, what do you think is a reasonable amount to buy it back, either with a view to fix it and out it back on the road as a cat D (assuming that is how they will class it), or to break ?

Needless to say i am gutted, i spent ages finding the right car, have enjoyed driving it and have spent money and lots of time getting it right, @£&@####.
Fingers crossed for a good outcome.

Oh man... Thats really bad news, sorry to hear but at least your ok..

If it has chassis damage ( or the insurance class denotes that it needs chassis repair),then it maybe CAT C...

Buyback is usually a 10th(or used to be) of the cars value...So if you can get it cheap enough there is plenty of scope to repair or break and make decent money,or end up with a cheap MC albeit on the damage register..

Just see how you go,they may repair it yet.....fingers crossed..

          Oh dear, not good news.

Thing is a new painted bonnet alone is circa 1500 quid just for starters. Make syou wonder if it would be actually worth it?

Sorry to hear that - I smashed my S50 up so I know what you must be feeling like.

As said above, be very open on what it will cost you to put it back together as costs will probably more than you hope they would be. You could well be in a position where the car is worth less, with it being recorded, than it will to put it back together.

I hope you get a decent deal from your insurance company. There is a few threads on here with people detailing the battles they have had with insurance companies after writing a car off with the main thing being dont accept their 1st offer!

              Thats not good news.

I'd personally buy it back if you have the time and space to get it fixed.
You can do it alot cheaper than they are quoting if you search for second hand parts and arnt affraid to get your hands dirty.

I smashed a really really nice 968 CS up about 4 years ago.
Looking back I really wish that I'd fought to have it repaired or bought it back.
I'm not sure if modern insurance companies are keen on dealing with individuals buying the car back. From what I understand they prefer to deal direct with the big breaker yards!
Also a huge cost factor is the time it takes to repair ad your insurance giving you a suitable replacement @ £500 per week hire cost!

                Good luck.

If the car is that good do what you can to get it back!

Let us knOw how the insurance co behave as this will help us when choosing, the cheapest isn't always the best!

                Gutted for you

Sorry to hear about your car Steely.

Interesting point that Dave made about hire car costs, if you don't need one it might be worth telling the ins. co. that you don't to try to encourage them to repair the car - if that's what you want!

Might also be worth trying to get a quote from a smaller, more specialised repair centre, these are usually better anyway. You could also try to authorise the use of some second hand parts (bonnet for example) to keep the cost down if you'd like the car back & want to keep it off the register. Not sure how the ins. co. will view this, but it might be worth a shot!

Failing that, as has been said before, you could buy it back and repair it yourself, you could get a specialist to do the chassis work & paintwork, if that's beyond your scope, but do the rest yourself.

Final option is to break the car (if you have the heart), if you could buy it back at 10% of it's book value, there's going to be money to be made here!

Best of luck with getting the right outcome!

                    gutted :(

Labour is the problem when it comes to repairing it, will cost more than the parts in the end

Thing I’ve found with them is if you have the time you can find the parts cheap enough (unless its coupe specific) and they are very simple to work on, everything is easy to get and take off. (Engine & box out and having the front end all stripped down will only take a day)

The only thing I’d get someone to check and sort out if needed is the suspension issue.

Insurance (Allianz) have written it off :-(
I am waiting for a copy of the engineers report, but i think repairs were quoted at close to 9k by Sytner Birmingham.

Together with the insurance valuer, I went through the cars currently for sale on pistonheads and autotrader, offer was worked out there and then based on average of the cars i agreed were similar to mine, after excess i end up with a little more than i paid for it with private reg, and i can keep the reg, impressed with the service from Allianz so far.

Regarding buying my car back, I have to contact the salvage company.
                      will update !

Really sorry to read about your accident mate. Sounds like your insurers are doing ok with your claim at least. Let's hope you get a decent buy back price.

What a bummer - feel for you, but glad that at least you are OK.

Write off is such an common/easy option these days - labour costs killing off many cars that could be repaired.

What a great pity - but its only metal at the end of the day and your health is far more important. Just so bloody annoying though............

Try and get it repaired - the 5 engineers who burnt the midnight oil creating this modern masterpiece would want you to!

Good luck in getting it back for a reasonable price.

Thanks for the sympathy guys, been without my coupe for a couple of weeks now, i have gotten over the initial shock, helped when the cheque turned up yesterday, but i am missing her.

Insurance told me the car will go to auction, and as it is unlikely that i will bid myself (i don't have the space, know how or time) I will post details here when i find out more in a few weeks, potential bargain for some one who knows what they are doing.

In the mean time i have started trawling the web for a replacement and have spoken to a couple of sellers (and forum members), but i have decided to take my time, spend a bit more money and try to get a lower mileage example thats exactly what i want (i have a better idea of what that is now), to that end I am going to sell my private reg (M33 CPE) to go towards the fund, and anything else i find (think i have some M mats, an untouched service book, wing mirror motors etc).

Will post up in the for sale section when i get time and put reg up on pistonheads/ebay.

                              Thanks.
