  • New Member - Hi! My Z3M (W599PJB)

    Hello all,

I'm the guy that took the risk on a much debated & talked about MC.

    See the thread here

Its a 2000 facelift S50, Cosmic Black, Kyalami & Black interior.

The car lacked a robust history and speculation of the cars past had made it out to be bit of a joke within the community, but knowing I could get the car for £7500 and how 'geeky' I can be in getting a cars true history I thought it was worth the shot, after all it was a cheap way to ownership of a car i've always wanted to own.

So, I was facing some stiff evidence that the car had been raced, clocked, etc & unfortunately it had been owned by a character or two in the past.

So my initial car check showed at least it was not a write off, never been imported / exported, stolen etc. Ok, there was plentiful owners, but ive seen a few cars swap hands often.

Next was to get in touch with Rod Barrett (Hawthorne Motorsport) & Dave Shelton (Moore racing) to see if the car was raced by them.

    Rod Barrett was a gent and sent me the history of their Z3M;

So it turns out this was not raced or owned by Hawthorne motorsport as theirs was a 1999, imported / exported model.

I'm waiting for some more details from Dave Shelton, but at the moment I'm lead to believe it was a spare & never got to the track. The lack of holes or welds where any cage would have gone also suggests this is true.

The car when sold back in 2010 featured some uprated suspension, which has since been removed & replaced by fresh, new bushed suspension all over inc drop links, ARB links, top mounts etc. The car also had a replacement engine put in of which I am still waiting for details, but one concerned viewer of the car had a little video clip of the engine making a 'dry bearing' noise. This was nothing more than a noisy cold start motor though (replaced for new) and the engine seems to run very well now, with no odd noises at all & it pretty brisk to say the least.

The new owner also had to replace the bumper & have the bonnet resprayed, this with a whole host of other little things to get the car in a good condition & it drives well with no weird noises & straight & true.

Next issue I faced was finding out about the suposed 'clocking'. I got onto the VOSA website and as suggested the MOT history showed a disparity between 2006 & 2007, going down about 16k (from 96k to 80k), but in 2008 jumping up 35k? (from 80k to 115k - really?).

It looks like a MOT wrong entry and checking back I can see on the MOT it going down on the pass sheet & unless it was a taxi the 35k jump looks ridiculous, but of course i needed more evidence. So I got the car scanned by DIS / TIS on a geeks laptop and luckily the ECU & some other box of tricks both confirmed the odo mileage of 122k to be correct.

Side note: apparently there is a tamper red dot that shows on the display if the clocks have been adjusted.

With this info printed I spoke to VOSA, who managed to get some other mileage info (don't know where) and my suspicions are correct, it looks like a simple case of MOT mileage being entered as 79,994 instead of the correct mileage of 99,994. Phew, another thing off my mind. Unfortunately you only have 7 days to get an MOT centre to change an MOT certificate mileage, so 5 years is a bit too much, but a lesson to me in the future, always check the MOT mileages when you get your certificate.

    Here she is back home.

I only got chance to quickly run a clay bar over her this morning, just to check the quality of the paint & I can already tell it is going to make a massive difference giving it a clay & cut. The recently sprayed bonnet, replacement bumper and original flanks meant there was a very slight difference in between the panels, but on the clayed areas I can see no difference, so all will be fine after a valet, just a case of previous owners not being able to clean a car properly before me rather than mismatched paint luckily.

To do list for now is to remove the tints from the rear glass as its not my thing & cheapens the car and give it a good clean. Rear wiper does not seem to have much spring against the window, so got to look at that too. The engine fluids look brand new, so not in a hurry to get it serviced, but that will go on the list and although ive checked the boot floor already, i'm going to unstick the sound proofing so I can check regularly.

Sorry for such a long post, but much to tell after only a few days ownership.

Love the forum by the way, lots of great info!

    James

Forgot to also add, that simply going into BMW I managed to get a lot of history about the car from BMW Lloyd Colne & BMW Carrs garages. A nice simple way to get some history for the car to match the recent receipts / bills. My search continues for more info & history however until I have as much as I can

A sad day - I will be selling my Z3MC

Despite taking on this Z3MC and getting her all sorted, her illusive past clarified and enjoying her so much over this summer, I am unfortunately being sent out of country again having just returned not so long ago.

I will be putting a full ad up on the forums later tonight and you might also see it on a few other forums too. Hopefully the car doesn't cause as much controversy as when I first bought it.

Typically she has had a new MOT & Tax at the beginning of the month (before I new I was selling her) but at least the new buyer will be able to just drive away and enjoy.
