  • Seat height adjustment

Does anyone know of any modifications or tricks to get the factory seats lower at all besides changing them for something else?
    Cheers folks

Chris (c_w) has stripped out some of the base on his - works a treat and felt like a great driving position when I sat in his MC at Silverstone last year.

I'm sure he'll post details when he's on.

Yep I've cut the seat base out where your bum is. Haven't thought about taking some out of the back - might try that at some point!

With the seat out the leather trim can be unpicked and I literally used a serated bread knife to cut off the underside of the foam so that it retained the top contours. The leather on the base isa little saggy now beinghonest but I much prefer the driving position. I kept the bit I cut off so I could refit it at a later date.

Looks like it might be a known mod in the US then! I just experimented with it as I was just sick of slouching/crouching in the car, but at 5'10 I'm not nearly as tall as those complaining - I just don't like sitting high in a car! The low doors don't help the feeling though!

I might look at the seat back too if this means you sit more "inside" the seat as it will increase side bolster performance (as it has done with my base). Trade off is slightly baggy leather (says not noticeable in that thread, but it is, even if you cut the foam off the "back" not where it faces the leather.

How does the plastic backing come off the back of the seat?

I have a feeling that they are referring to the foam on the reverse side of the floor carpet that extends up over the fuel tank section behind the seat as there is about and inch or so of foam stuck to the back of the carpet.

I think what i'm going to do is save up and have the seats in mine re-trimmed next year sometime and get the trim shop to reduce the foam at that point. like Boost' i'm 6'4" and only really just fit which, other than old 911's, has always been an issue in "fun" cars. especially retro Italians! In the ZMC i'd never be able to take it to a track day as I just cant get in with a helmet on! :(

There are two ways to do the hump removal mod.

                  1. Remove all trim in the boot and the start cutting (gets a bit more foam)
                  2. Slide seat all the way forward and cut where there is an outline for the fuel tank. ( much easier and quicker)

After doing both on my past and present coupe I would say go the second route much quicker and you avoid and rattles being caused when putting everything back

Never having removed the seat, is there no way of making a new frame, ditching all the electric bits with the aim of fitting the standard seats lower?

I thought of that but at that point you might as get seats that are lower

I looked at this but the way the seat is designed the electrics don't really interfere or compromise the height of the seat. To lower it you'd probably need to make a new seat frame. BMW didn't make a non-electric seat for the Z3 which is a shame though as that might have been lower maybe, if not lighter.
