  • ACS Suspension refurb

I bought my MC having been advised that it had ACS suspension fitted, but no clarification of which version.

Not knowing much about the different versions to this date, I wasn't aware the two versions were actually different formats, (ie the 'race' version is coilovers up front, the 'sport' version being the same format as OE, but I assume with upgraded Bilstein dampers and ACS springs). I bought a spare low-mileage set of ACS suspension last year, not thinking about which version (muppet!)

It turns out (I think) that my MC has the 'race' version, and the spare is the 'sport' version. The original front-offside coilover has a bit of a leak so I *was* going to replace everything with the low mileage replacement set that I bought, not knowing it was different.

Anyway, to cut to the chase, I'd rather keep the 'race' version, so can anybody advise on where to get it refurbed?

(sorry, that took an age to get to the point )

Oh wait... it's Bilstein kit, so probably Bilstein right?

    Move along, nothing to see.

However, there may be a full set of low mileage ACS 'sport' suspension available shortly

That's interesting as the race version I thought was really stiff for the road, but I wouldn't say your car road that firmly even on 18s!

Not sure who to point to for refurb though!

Cheers for the lead there Indy, just down the road so will give them a call too.

Chris, I've been looking through various threads trying to find out what I've got fitted currently, and what the spare set is. I've hardly been under the car to be honest, but I jacked the front up tonight and peered in to the arch. Definitely coilovers marked Bilstein, but from the little I could see between the tyre and arch, they don't appear to be adjustable, which appears to be the case on the image Dave P posted from the ACS brochure:

Similarly, I'm still a little confused about the spare set that I bought. They look identical to the OE front setup, and they are covered in undersell so I can't see if they're marked Bilstein or not. The rears are marked Bilstein. Just hoping the fronts are ACS and I've not been ripped off with a set of OE fronts

I'll get a better look at weekend

Given their preference for sticking their logo on anything they touch, I'm beginning to wonder if it's actually ACS kit. While I'm sure I've read that their kits are Bilstein, would they leave them badged as such? I'll get in touch with Rossiters if Dave P doesn't come along shortly with his ACS knowledge overnight

Either way, it's a great ride that I'd prefer to refurb than replace with anything else - great performance while not being overly harsh/crashy.

Just before Christmas, I went through a similar situation.

I had ACS race setup (fitted by BMW in 2003) on mine and the front shocks where starting to have a lot of lateral play.

so the options I had were, source some new front shocks - couldn't find any unsuprisingly!

get the ones I had refurbed - sadly on inspection they were damaged beyond repair and therefore couldn't be done.

Then after a long conversation with someone from Bilstien about the possibilities of having a pair made from scratch to match the spec ACS gave (which the can do happily £600 each starting from price!) we decided that the current release of the B8 shocks all-round, were a superior shock to the spec'd ACS units and cheaper to replace all four with B8's than any of the other options for just the fronts. the B8's had to be used over B6's as the ACS springs are shorter than stock so the shocks must also be shorter. the B6's are factory length where the B8's are designed for shorter springs.

this also gave me the opportunity to put rouges on the rear.

have to say i'm hugely impressed with the setup.

                  Good to know thanks mate.

I've heard from Rossiters this morning who have confirmed my suspicion that the coilovers fitted to my MC are Bilstein units rather than ACS items.

I'll also get in touch with Bilstein for a refurb cost and make a call then.

I could always just fit the low mileage ACS 'sport/road' suspension I got last year, but I love the way the car drives with the coilovers currently fitted.

Tony, what's the point of having the set that you bought last year if you don't actually use them now? If you have your present set refurbed, then you can at least try the "spare" set in the meantime and if you don't like the kit you could sell it on when you refit the refurbed suspension.

I'm confused! :S So you're not sure if EITHER kit you have is really ACS or just the front on the "spare" kit? I've always understood the ACS Road/Sport kit with normal front struts to be very similar to the Bilstein B8 damper, but is black. The damper should be inverted so the piston rod should be very thick (almost as thick as the strut body).

The main thing with that kit IMO is making sure you have the proper ACS springs.

the acs logo will be pressed/stamped into the front struts (i think!) but it may look very faint if they are dirty

have you got any pics of both sets? could help identify exactly what they are!

i agree with exdos about fitting the spare set and running them, get the originals refurbed

youd also find out if theyre busted or not too

Well the springs of the spare set have the ACS copy on them. That's a step in the right direction at least. I'll get all the bloody underseal stripped off at weekend and get a good look.

The above picture looks like a "Road" kit, (pictures below of new set which also includes 2 alloy subframe spacers)
