I agree, I would avoid run flats if possible. They were a real step backwards for BMW IMO. It is pretty telling that all the current M cars do not have them.
As Paul said people who have newer BMWs fitted with runflats and value ride quality, remove them at the first opportunity and buy a mobility kit (i have this in my E91 and run Conti 5ps).
The MC was never fitted with them so I would check your mobility kit is present and working (or buy another) and stick with standard, unless you have a really good reason to do otherwise
I bought an e 46 , 17 inch space saver and tyre brand new from bmw for just over a hundred quid for euro trips , not sure if it will fit a coupe but that and 4 new normal tyres work out cheaper than 4 new run flats , z4s are notorious for tram lining on run flats , they make every trip hard work .
For run flats, doesn't the rim design/profile differ to normal rims to allow for the tyre to run flat. As far as I know you can run ordinary tyres on run flat rims but you cannot do vice-versa as the runflat tyre will not stay on the rim when deflated.
As mentioned elsewhere, I haven't heard any good reports on modern cars running runflats, everyone with any need for a good performance tyre changes them at first opportunity.
Not a good idea to retro fit on a Z3MC (I presume that is what original poster was thinking of), the car wasn't designed to run them.
Lots of better tyres out there of conventional design that could be fitted, also they will be considerably cheaper that runflats I would think.
Just do a search of the forum and you'll get loads of info.
Don't think you'll find anyone mentioning runflats.

We run runflats on our 123d through the year but switch to xl 'normal' tyres for the winter months - have to say I prefer the feel of the car on the runflats (Goodyear Eagle F1) even with the firmer M Sport suspension on the car. I know many report a crashy ride, but not something that bothers me on this car
Wouldn't ever consider sticking runflats on the MC though.

Not sure about sticking run flats on a ZMC but I would be concerned about fitting non-run flat tyres on a car designed to run on run flats without at least letting your insurance company know as this could be counted as a non-standard modification and as such invalidate your insurance.

Yeah, there was loads of discussion around this when people started doing so. I'm pretty sure that insurers agreed it wasn't an issue as long as they were the same size and speed rating as OEM.

Your probably right, it's likely scaremongering by the manufacturers to make sure you buy ridiculously expensive run flat replacements. Had to buy four new for my 5 series recently and despite many hours of price checking had to stump up £1,100!!! Despite them being big wheels non run flats equivalents would have been a lot less!
Friend of mine put a winter wheel/tyre (non run-flat) combo on his X5 the winter before last and said it 'transformed' the car. The run-flats never went back on. Just checked with him - he did contact his insurers after hearing scare stories and they weren't at all bothered as long as the tyres were correct size & rating as Fat Tony says.
My wife has had them on both her new Mini and her 1 series; made the Mini very crashy but not so noticeable on the 1. Definitely wouldn't put them on the MC though
