  • Wiper relay or stalk issue?

As I've said before, my rear wiper motor has packed up of late but in the last few days I've also noticed that when I press to activate the rear wiper (push the stalk away from me) that the front washer jets fire, like they would if you pulled the stalk towards you.....

Is this likely to be a problem with the stalk itself or the washer relay (wherever that is?!)? Or something else.....

    Cheers

I don't think there is a relay but a module for the wipers p/n 61358369474

I had to replace my module a year or two ago, no issues since.

Thanks. I'll take a look in the Bentley manual.

        What were your symptoms?

          I think it's more likely a pump/ pipe issue.

Check the voltage to the pump, you should get 12v when the front washes are activated then the live/ earth should be reversed for the rear washers.

I wouldn't be surprised with that as I've been through a few! The only thing that's making me think it might be something else is that the rear wiper doesn't wipe either....

My new multimeter arrived yesterday to check for such things....just need to work out how to use it now!!

As I remember, they were twofold. One was the front wipers sometimes would not turn off with the ignition on, second was something to do with the rear wiper/wash but I can't recall exactly what. My guess has been that the internals of the module short/ partially fail after a time. Anyway, replacing the unit fixed it all.

My rear wiper stops in strange places, turnng the ignition off and then on sets it on its way again with random stop ! i am sure that the part Dave is referring to will sort it out,as the motor is new !

There are different wiper modules depending on cars spec so worth checking realoem with your vin for the correct one

The motor is only ~1 year old but you never know...

RealOEM shows the following against my VIN, what's the difference (as we established last week, I have headlight washes.... )?!

Yes the difference looks to be whether the car has headlamp wash or not

But they both say with....until the yes/no in the next column along?!

I need to work out whether it is the pump and wiper motor first as this module isn't a cheap piece of kit

Had my newly purchased multimeter in action today and as you say, when I put the meter across the connector and activate the front washers I get 12V and when I activate the rear washer I get 12v but the opposite polarity (if that's the right phrase). This to me says that the module is working correctly, as the pump is getting the correct signal, its the pump that isn't then firing it front or back.....I assume there must be a valve of some sort in the pump to change the direction that isn't working.

I also put the meter across the rear wiper motor, which seems to have a permanent feed and also a switched feed. Permanent 12V feed is there and, when activated, 12V to the switched as well. Therefore assuming that the motor is knackered as well.

                              New motor and pump required!
