  • Smaller Steering Wheel

Im looking at fitting a smaller steering wheel and Ive search through previous posts but havent really found an answer.

Can anyone suggest what the options are? Anyone got a smaller wheel fitted, if so what is it and does it still have airbag etc? Ive got a late '99 MC.

your options are a sparco wheel like my old one (none airbag) (see my gallery)
or to get a raid wheel like chris's (CW)

for the sparco its around £160 including the boss

and the raid is around £400

I have a Raid 340mm one fitted. It has an airbag, in fact according to the blurb it is a 'full-size' airbag which I believe might inflate to a larger size than the factory ones. Fitting it was relatively straightforward using the correct boss adapter. The 2 Torx screws on the back of the wheel are a little awkward to access. In practice I am very happy with it as I can still see all the instruments clearly and it sits a little closer (~15-20mm if I recall) to the seat.

However mine is an early '99 MC without the 'smart' or 2-stage airbag. I am not sure if the connectors are different on the later models with the 'smart' airbag wheels. I believe there might even be 2 connectors. If so you might have problems with the connectors and/or airbag light.

Yea that is something you need to work around on the post 04/99 models. Raid say it doesn't fit these newer models, but then reading small print offer a convertor loom so it does!!! All you need to do is disable the slow stage circuit by means of a 3.3ohms resistor (so no airbag light).

Does anybody know of a DIY that describes how to fit an E46 CSL wheel to the the MC / ZR. Doing a google search just brings up so much guff....

chris asked me this the other day, its a can of works, first issue is the wiring won't match, the other one is the back of the wheel is totally different and won't self cancel the indicators oh and the slip ring won't either.

Assuming you arent bothered about having a working airbag isnt it possible to fit any steering wheel to the coupe with the correct boss? i.e Momo, Raid, sparco?

Would just need to disable the airbag light as cw says..

My understanding of it is that a complete E46 slip ring is required with the indicators. The ring then needs to be litterly cut in half and and closed back up again.

Regarding the airbag, am I right in thinking that post 04/99 cars are dual stage? TBH the wiring doesn't bother me its more the cutting and shutting of the SR.

on the back of the steering wheel on the e36 Z3M wheel it has 3 small holes for the slip ring to attach, the back of the e46 there are no holes to screw into, also the way the e46 self cancels is different, the back of the wheel has metal lump so it would sit to far out from the back of the wheel.

The only way it could work is without a slip ring, the airbag not working, and the indicators not self canceling. but then i guess thats not working really is it
