  • Flat spot in power

    Hi guys,

I seem to be suffering from little power until I hit 2.3k rev then ummph it kicks in. Munich motors had a look and changed a part but it hasn't helped. They didn't seem too interested in prying any further. Can anyone recommend a tuner or someone with some know how who can help? I am in the Reading area.

    Regards

    Andrew

The gain at 2.3 is normal, that's the vanos working properly....

How odd, it has never been so defined before. I have done 30k miles in my M so far and never noticed so much before

I also would have thought a BMW specialist may have mentioned that it was just the Vanos... Should it ditch em? I have used them for a while.

i currently have a issue with my vanos but when i spoke to Mr Vanos he told me you should see a substantial power gain in certain gears almost like a turbo charger kicking in.

put the car into 4th gear at about 30mph, put you foot flat to the floor and you should feel a kick around 2500-3000.

also in first gear you should feel a kick at around 6000rpm.

sounds like your vanos is working properly.

Yep, that's exactly it. As I said though, very disappointed the specialist didn't point this out.

My car pulls through the rev range without big steps at certain revs - I thought this was how the S50 engine runs?

Mine definitely kicks it up a notch at circa 2.5k, 3.2k and 4.1kish (give or take some!). That's how vanos works

Interesting stuff about what people think is correct for the vanos power delivery, worth a read of this site all about vanos repair and especially "symptoms" of a failing unit

Well I'll be watching this thread with interest. My S50 pulls smooth throughout with no really noticeable 'jumps' in power at any point

(Rolls Royce vanos if that makes any difference)

My car also runs smoothly thru all gears, however you can "feel" a difference in the acceleration if you are high revving...my vanos has been re-built using uprated seal's etc....its not a big difference but it is noticable..with faster gains on the rev counter...

Just to add to the confusion, I've just had the Vanos replaced on my E36. Oddly the step between 'stages' was more obvious when it was not working properly, its now a lot smoother and making ~25 bhp more than it was pre Vanos fix.

To drive it feels like it has more torque down low (which it does) and is smoother in the transition around the 2500 rpm mark.

Indeed, the whole point of the Vanos is to improve torque across the lower revs, on high revving engines such as these.
My S50 also delivers a fairly linear response across the rev band, in any gear.
