  • My Estoril S50, Chuffed to have an M Coupe

I've had her about three months now.

88K Miles and in generally good condition but with a few jobs to do and a few scratches on the paintwork here and there.

I looked at several cars varying by about 10K in price, the market seemed a bit all over the place. I also considered hunting down an S54, but it would have been a rough one and in all honestly I don't feel at all short changed. I like the cable throttle, Black M Power cam cover/engine bay and the fact there is no TC to nanny.

I was really pleased to get my preferred Estoril Blue with the blue/black leather and with the speaker pods on the roof, sunroof etc. Classic spec for me.

Quite like having the Damon Hill Plates and stickers still intact.

Stacks of service history and work from BMW dealers right up to 2016 from new.

New short block under warranty at 62K miles, at this stage I take that as a good thing really.

    Jobs Done So Far:
    • 4 New Michelin Pilot Sport Tyres
    • New Genuine Gearknob to replace the slightly worn old one(love how the M logo lights up on these)
    • New Throttle Cable to replace the old stretched one gaining seemingly 30-40bhp.
    • Changed the Gearbox oil and it now goes into reverse a lot easier and the shift is a bit smoother. Filled with Amsoil MTF Fluid.
    • Replaced the Viscous fan clutch as it was on its way out with signs of play/vibration and didn't have much sign of drag from cold.
    • Changed all aircon and aux belts, along with hydraulic belt tensioner and all idler pulleys (the existing ones have an intermitant squeak). old pulleys felt all gritty
    • new M Badge for the rear :)

    Jobs still to do:

    • Replace worn seat bushings. Have bushings to fit.
    • Fit braided clutch line that removes the clutch delay valve, gives a more natural feel to the gearshift I'm told.
    • Rear wiper activates but doesn't work, need to investigate.
    • order and fit H&R anti roll bars
    • order and fit different rear exhaust boxes (probably) and or X pipe.
    • perform Vanos diagnostic check with emulated BMW DIS software, have ordered lead and software.
    • take sill cover and wheel arch liners off to double check for corrosion. having had her up on the ramp she seems better than a few others I looked at but need to investigate further.
    • Paint some parts with POR15 and maybe send some other small parts for power coating.
    • Change Water Pump, Thermostat, Coolant and hoses for preventative maintenance.

    Changing Belts etc:

That'll make it go faster!! New Badge.

Have bitten the bullet and ordered some Hayward And Scott back boxes.

      https://www.haywardandscott.com/bmw-z3m-rear-boxes.html

Made locally to me, they've done custom work for me before an I was pleased with the result.

Fingers crossed I've done the right thing! Credit card suitably abused....

        Great write up!

Let us know what the sound is like from the new back boxes

Love it, well I would because mine is the same spec.

I’m really interested to hear the feedback on the H&S system and what it’s like to live with.

          Enjoy

The engine bay looks good, there is a rubber strip laying on the radiator which should be fixed to form an air seal but is out of position - just needs repositioning

Ah Hawkeye, thanks, I think I forgot to put that back after having the fan cowling out for changing the viscous fan clutch.

Anyone recalls torque values for the belt tensioners? Checked but could not easily find this in TIS.

Despite searching for this, and looking at my bentley manual I could not find these either. I went for what felt right.

Good to see another car being looked after.

How do you find the 4 New Michelin Pilot Sport Tyres, I've always run Pilot sports on my M's and had a set of super sports on one of my last E46.

This current car has some Uniroyal rain sports on the front and some cheap ditch finders on the rear, so not sure if to pop some matching Uniroyal's on the rear, or to bite the bullet and buy a set of Pilot Sports.

Any thoughts from a fellow Z3M owner would be appreciated.

No worries, I find the PS4's brilliant and very confidence inspiring in all weathers. Good traction too. Steering feel pretty good.

I also had them on a Maserati 3200 Assetto Corsa about two years ago (when the tyre had just come out) and they were good on that too.

I was a little disappointed that I could not get the higher performance Pilot Sport 4S in this size, but no regrets on going for the PS4.

A bonus is that the sidewalls have a nice silky finish to them that somehow looks quite smart.

I had a similar situation, aged tyres when I bought her. I was actually worried that one of my wheels was bent/buckled and that was a negotiating point, but new tyres one and balanced up and it's all good which was a relief. I think a wheel weight might have come off before.

Your car looks great I have to say.

PS4s are an excellent choice of tyre. I've had them on a couple of cars, and as above they are very confidence inspiring. I've also had them on track too and the coped admirably, I didn't really feel them go 'off' like you do with some tyres

Hayward and Scott Exhaust Arrived this week.

Photos on this link because I've struggled to embed them again, struggled last time despite having flickr links:

                          https://www.flickr.com/photos/186672.../shares/8k9qJ1

I'd say the general finish is not bad but I've also seen better. The separate flanges seem like a good idea to make sure it fits nicely/the boxes can rotate... Also feels quite light.

The biggest thing will be how it sounds though! Unfortunately can't try as my car is away for a little work to tidy up and preserve the sills etc.

Also not sure whether to say something to them but I seem to have ended up with rolled tips when on the website it shows straight cut which I think looks better???

May be different depending on browser / pc software etc but for me this works - in flickr bottom left download picture - view all sizes - and then copy and paste picture

                              Thanks Dave :)

These tips will be fine I think, although arguably straight looks better :)
