Only had my coupe a few months and not done any miles yet, but I have bought a few parts to fit such as anti roll bars, bushes etc and have planned a few maintenance things like valve clearance’s, vanos unit rebuild just to make sure everything’s fresh. I have a couple of mechanics who work for me and one of them is very very good, he built my old track car e46 m3, rebuilt the vanos unit, changed the rod bearings, changed the springs in the gearbox, fitted new clutch, fitted Redish strengthening plates to the rear subframe (he can weld like a robot)etc etc, he’s now working on my 850csi, basically I would trust him over anybody working on any of my cars, problem is the service book won’t be stamped when we service the car ourselves, would people find this much of a problem if I ever decide to sell?? I was thinking of taking photos of everything we do and also mileage photos etc when servicing.

People can be fickle, someone, but as long as you have receipts for the work, it is what it is. I finally did my old service last year, as I just couldn't justify paying BMW prices for 70 quids worth of oil and filter, but in the past people have been funny buying my cars from me when they don't have full dealer history.
Put it another way, if you bought any car and then did all your own servicing, you have to way up the money saved on servicing v's the price the car may be worth less than a full service on when you come to sell.
In the main IMO when cars are over 20 years old, receipts all the way, and I've even bought a little "self Serviced" stamp just to record services in the book going forward.
Hope this helps

I've had the same dilemma, my car has 90,000 miles with mostly main dealer service history and a couple of specialists.
I'm going to do a service myself next week but I'll keep a receipt of parts bought and note what was changed, also perhaps in the service book.
I have so many receipts for stuff for my car now and I always write a date and mileage on the receipt whatever i change.
Thought about asking someone else to do it but it seems silly when I have a ramp and I can do it myself!
I'm even going to take an oil sample of the old oil and send it to the lab just as a precautionary step to check the overall health of my engine.
So with good records I think people would see it as ok.
Maybe the slightly higher mile driver cars like mine it wouldn't matter so much, if I had a low mileage "collector: grade car than I'd get a dealer to do it as that sort of buyer would be extra sniffy?Last edited by urquattrogus; 22-02-2021, 02:08 PM.

Their all views which I’ve thought myself, my cars on 49k so it’s hard to know what to do, but I just don’t want anyone else working on the car only ourselves, I would never leave an M car in to an official dealer for an inspection 2 service because I doubt they would ever check the valve clearance’s never mind change the shims. I’ll have receipts for parts and I have a stamp but it’s only a stamp for our business not a official workshop one, so not if I’ll stamp the book are just write date and mileage in it

When we see dealers crash customers cars then I would stay clear of BMW dealers as much as possible
