    Thanks

More progress today on my "holiday" week off from work.

I started applying the Underseal using a Schutz gun. Put the full hazmat suit mask and goggles on just in case! Masking it was pretty fiddly too.

Pleased with the results, It's much better than just using a rattle can and I think looks relatively oem in colour and texture.

As with all of the paints I tested it first on the sections of floor that have been removed, very handy!

Maybe I shouldn't have coated the diff ear too, but gave it just a light coat, it was fairly unavoidable and then it is all coated the same.

Also touched up some other areas like the spring pans which were rubbed back and painted, have new rubber caps to go on them. I had to re apply a bead of seal sealer to where the two halves of the spring pan meet before painting.

Also the subframe mounting screw area, all rubbed down, de rusted, primed and top coated. This worked quite well as Reddish motorsport have only just done the sills and sprayed the edges of them, obviously they couldn't get in this corner without the subframe out.

Then finally a top coat and laquer in the boot:

The first Estoril 335 spray can I ordered wasn't the best match so I had to get some from another supplier which was a better match and also applied much better. Again worked well testing it on a couple of the floor offcuts.

I'm planning on fitting Dynmat Extreme Sound Deadening over the boot floor, this should work well and will also be a damn sight easier for someone else to remove than the horrible bitumen pads.

It's coming together! Can't wait to get back to the mechanicals now!

Super basic question, my new control arms arrived like this from BMW, should they be painted black to replicate the original spec or leave them in this bare finish?

They look good in silver but I sprayed mine satin black as I am trying to keep the car as original as possible,

More steady progress, i've been busy at work and I'm also waiting for a few parts.

Powerflex Rear Beam Bushes, diff bush also changed for a new one, and of course new trailing arm bushes.

It's getting closer to back where it should be!

            Smaller parts painted etc

Boot floor done but waiting for sound deadening later. Plenty of cavity wax used in the crossmembers etc

New Fuel Tank Strap kit arrived (BMW could not supply), looks nicely made:

Well, just the exhaust and wheels to go on now more of less.

Then I have to start on the front!!!!!

Tried to clean up the heat shields a little with jizer and brake cleaner, but to no avail, but not worried to be honest.

I have also now applied Dynamat Extreme to the boot floor.

This should be easier for anyone who wants to remove it at a later date and just as if not more effective than the oem bitumen pads that were a b@tch to chip off.

Looking good, the front should be a lot easier than the rear

I hope so dave, it's tempting to throw the parts at a dealer and say get it done, I don't like having cars off the road for long, really miss driving her!

I took over as MD of a company with 500 employees in January so this car has been a welcome distraction but also a source of occasional frustration on top of everything else that is happening this year!!

So much more rewarding doing work yourself if you have the skills and you know the work is done to a standard you are happy with.

                          Non pictorial update for now.

I've got some new side skirts which are away being painted up.

I have to say it is great that they are only about £140 a side.

Seems only right to replace them after all of the work I've done on the back end and the work Reddish Motorsport did on re treating the sills and jacking points.

Also still in the process of putting boot trim back in. I've taken the plunge and ordered new sound deadening for both rear arches, I could have re used the old ones but they seem to go so brittle and have cracked a lot, no longer flexible.

Also ordereded some of those diddy small screw cap covers for putting the rear plastic bulkhead back in place.

Must really then crack on with the front!

Oh and on a whim I've ordered a private plate, on retention for now but may fit that too :)

Need to get some more work done before the weather gets colder and becomes like an icebox!

Are you based in Bristol? Or did you just use Redish as they are specialists?

Great work by the way, car looks great. If you need any more “distractions” I’ll happily hand you mine and you can have a second go! I’m sure the second time would be easier

Thanks, you are right, always easier the second or third time, at least you learn more with each car you own though :)

I'm Essex based but trekked all the way to Reddish as I'd seen their youtube videos etc.

This is actually my car in this video:

                              https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d99Ba7lictE

They did a nice job although in retrospect having done all the paint and prep on the back end myself maybe i should have also done the sills.

It cost me £2K to have the sills and jacking points done and they also fitted a braided clutch hose for me, so not cheap but it takes some time good quality of work.

You can see why I'm replacing the sill covers, the sills are now mint but the covers let the side down.
