  • S50 sump inspection cover

The S50B32 has what BMW call a cover fitted which appears to have a gauze fitted to it - does this act as a filter if so does it ever need cleaning/checking?

(large round plate on right side)

Cant find a good picture but S54 looks to have similar part fitted, looks like more of a catch than filter

Dave, did you ever take this off? Mine appears to have a tiny leak from this cover, but is it a gasket or an o-ring?

The photo (from the S54?) appears to be a flat gasket, and I'm sure looking at my car I can see some kind of gasket sandwiched between the plate and sump, but realoem shows an o-ring 33111214144

Never took it off my car but did get a new one which uses a large o ring not a gasket as pictured on the s54 above . Its a standard sized o ring used on other cars so only a couple of quid I think.

Thanks Dave - appears to be the same as the diff output seals, I might have some of those in the garage.

Interestingly my engine had developed an oil drip recently and tracked it down to the sump inspection cover. A new o-ring and it is sorted. Simple cheap fix in the end. The o-ring had gone flat with age. The catch filter was nice and clean into the bargain!

Looks like they are coming to the end of their lifespan if several people are getting leaks,

Mine had done the same thing! o-ring had flatted so the new round o-ring should sort it. Really easy job, just needs the x-brace dropping off.

Also nice to see the gauze in mine was also completely spotless after 140,000 miles.

Was a bit annoying as I'd changed the oil a few weeks before I realised the leak was coming from there!
