This engine is S50 not S54 though so probably not quite as much support, not only because it's 12 years old but there wasn' the known issue of the bearing recall as with the S54.

I realise that, but there's nothing to lose by making a phone call, ( you never know, stranger things have happened ).

Does anyone have a bmw contact that could get me any money off the engine parts? They're gonna be £2900 plus VAT! Crank is 1400 on its own...

Spud, what was your mileage - would be useful for other S50 owners as I have a thread on this very subject (s50 bearing shells) going on another forum. I'd be very keen to know:

          - Mileage
          - How it is driven (often sees 7k rpm+ etc)
          - Oil used
          - Mileage between oil changes and service history

Thanks for your info, and I really hope you do get it sorted soon and with not too great an expense.

          Keith.

Keith, is there a consensus formed about which oil is best then? Will regular oil changes keep this wolf from the door?

To be honest, if I was aware of the costs of the damage associated with this failure, i'd definately have invested a few hundred quid getting the shells and bolts changed at around 60000 miles and would advise anyone to do it now!

My mileage was 79000. Full BMW service history bar the last which was specialist. Was due a service... and it wouldn't actually have got the little bit of stick I gave it shortly before I heard 'the noise' had the traffic not been crap on the M5 necessitating a cross country excursion!

If I'm 100% honest I could've been more anal with service intervals/oil, so I blame myself a bit - but if one went, I suppose it would've gone at some point. I'm gonna be such a geek with it after I've spent this much putting it right though. I guess I know what I'll be driving for the next few years.

Sorry to hear this mate, what was the oil temp out of interest? When mine went it was the first time I'd ever really opened her up for a prolonged period. Perhaps previous owners never ragged the car, I don't know and I still cannot confirm the exact cause of my car's engine failure?

                Good luck,

                Paul
