  • Getting my imola S50 into shape

I've had my 1998 S50 for a couple of weeks now. I've managed to get around it on a few occasions and have given it a good clean inside and out and have managed to make a start on the process of getting it up to scratch, mechanically and cosmetically. The interior is in really good condition, I cleaned and conditioned the leather a week ago and that is looking really good with not much more to do than swap out the gear knob, which has slightly scuffed leather and a scruffy badge. The body work is sound, but does have a couple of area's that need addressing. I have a good bloke lined up to sort out a couple of very small blemishes on the paint work and new glass for the tail gate, which is going to be fitted this week. The rear wiper blade has attacked the old glass very badly with a big ark scratch across the full width of the glass. I will also be fitting new wiper blades when the new glass goes in. I have our local dent tech guy lined up to remove a couple of light dings on each door, car park scars, when he gets back off of holiday next week. Finally, I spoke to a BMW specialist today, just outside Oxford, who is taking the car in the week after next to give me a quote for the vanos repair, not really bad as yet but needs doing sooner rather than later. Once I have worked through that list it will be a thorough clean of the engine and bay and some fresh paint on the cam cover and the refurbishment of the Roadstars in the original paint. My brief is to get the car as close to how it left the factory, I love many of the mods that I have seen but haven't seen many totally original cars. I will be posting regular updates and pics for those that are interested and look forward to any questions and comments. Here it is before work commences.

I feel a bit daft starting a thread, only explaining what I'm going to do but I restored a motorcycle last year and regretted not starting the thread earlier. Here's my bike restoration thread for anyone that's interested.

            This.

Its a real shame you cant easily track the progress of members cars.

^ Damnit people, are you trying to ruin me? Thanks to Keith's thread, which I hadn't previously seen, I'm now waiting for delivery of a Storm Motorwerks Titanium finished gearknob (though I went for the V1).

I didn't even know they existed, or that I wanted one!

That's exactly why I'm doing mine completely stock, no temptations. Although when it's complete I know I will want to carry on, so I may go for some wheels later on, much later on. Gaz

Haha, standard is sort of my plan too, except I will do little reversible tweaks to improve the driving experience.

The plan is standard but for:
                      Gearknob
                      340mm steering wheel
                      Oil pressure and Volt gauge
Possible normal Z3 steering rack (fewer turns lock-to-lock)

That's it. Oh, and I had my rear spoiler colour-coded (also Imola) because the plastic looked a bit tired.

That's totally it. Nothing else. Ever.

                        Breezer,

Was your Imola S50 at Silverstone classic last Saturday ? if so were you parked under the bridge that separated BMW from the Z fest area ? Gaz

Hey Gaz, unfortunately not - it's been in storage for the last month.

I think the Imola belonged to ZZZEMMCO
