  • Side window demisting

My o/s side window demisting vent is broken and doesn't stay properly seated in the dash top. When I pull it out, I can see a pipe which it connects to which is clearly part 3 here: http://mfans2.com/parts/catalog/Z3-C...g/air_channel/.

Not sure what is supposed to hold the pipe in place but it does not appear to be secured and flaps around rather a lot. The n/s one seems more secure when I remove the n/s vent.

I am presuming that the vents to the windscreen and side windows are merely outlets for positive pressure inside the dash when the demisiter is selected.

Can anyone suggest what on earth the purpose of that pipe is, and how it is supposed to be secured? Is it perhaps designed to channel the air more effectively before it comes out of the vent?

I am thinking of pulling it out entirely.

    Many thanks.

The pipe isn't fixed as far as I know but I think the vent itself holds it in position, the vent has a couple of plastic tangs which hold it place but they are very weak and prone to breaking

That makes sense, but the strange thing is that the n/s one seems to be secured.

Fitted the new vent today - just pushes in but sorting out the feed pipes was rather more involved because I ended up removing the glovebox and all under dash panels on both sides.

Even once the underside of the dash is exposed, it is almost impossible to see where the feed pipe is supposed to sit because the face vent ducts are in the way. Turns out that those short pipes feeding the side demister vents do connect to the windscreen demister ducting which according to REALOEM etc does not exist (if such a part is listed I have no idea where).

Getting them into the correct position is quite fiddly if you don't remove the face vent ducts which looked hard to to and would have required removing the airbag in the passenger side which I didn't fancy.

        All good now.

Yes - that's the diagram that shows the face vent ducts but not the windscreen demister duct piece which is in the 2nd picture.
