  • Oil - Free 10w60 on collection

I have become convinced that, for the S50, 10w60 is not the way to go. The ZDDP content is too low and on balance I think a good quality 5w40 (I just switched to Fuchs Pro S) is better everyday, and still good enough for the track.

This means I have a spare batch of 10w60 - enough for an oil change with some to spare. If any S54 owners (or s50 owners who disagree) want it, then they can have it free if they collect from Cambridgeshire. There is one sealed 5L container, and another opened 5L container about half full.

I dont know a deal about oil but what makes you think what you have bought will be better?

Great - an oil thread. Here goes.

      - The research I have donme suggests the ZDDP in Castrol 10w60 is a bit low for the S50 engine. It really is designed for newer engines like the S54.

      - My car gets regular use even in the winter when dry so a 5wXX oil is more appealing for easier cold cranking.

      - My car used not a drop of Castrol 10w60 and I always worried a bit that it might eb too thick to reach the extremes of the engine. I'll monitor what usage rate I get with the thinner oil.

      - Opie oils advised me that 10w60 is a much thicker than the original oil recommended for the S50 engine. And as a general principle I'm becoming cautious about using oils for newer engines in older engines. I worry that modern oil and engines are all about environment and emmissions - and what leads to longevity for an older engine may be a bit different.

      - But I'm sure counter arguments can be constructed to all these points. Maybe I will change my mind again after a year on 5w40.

Yeah, the indy BMW specialists that I use (ex master techs) advised me that they think the 10w60 is a little too heavy for the S50. I know it's been discussed on here time and time again and this won't be the last time either
Not actually in the least bit fat

10w60 isn't recommended by BMW for the S50, only S54.

There's a few arguments for and against. When the S54 came out, it appears 5/30 was specified, much like the S50 was, and the 10/60 was part of the action BMW took to fix the shell issue and it could be suggested the S50 engine was long finished at this point and it doesn't suggest it's *not* suitable for the S50, just because it is talking about the S54.

from BMW Service Information Bulletin 11 06 01, October 2001

BMW has changed their engine-oil recommendation for all M cars equipped with the new S54 engine (E46 M3 coupe and convertible, 2001-on M coupe and M roadster) from the previous BMW High Performance Synthetic 5W-30 engine oil (made by Castrol), pn 07 51 0 017 866 (1 quart), to Castrol TWS Motorsport 10W-60 Synthetic Engine Oil (previously known as Castrol Formula RS 10W-60. . . the oil is the same, only the name has changed) pn 07 51 0 009 420 (1 liter).

Presently, BMW recommends Castrol TWS Motorsport 10W-60 for all S54-equipped M-cars as well as all S62-equipped M5s and Z8s produced after 3/00, the factory recommends BMW High Performance Synthetic 5W-30 engine oil. The oil change interval of approximately 15,000 miles or once a year remains unchanged.

Old thread but did you find any oil was used when switching back to the thinner 05/40?

Thanks for the follow up Dave - no - it still doesn't use oil at a noticeable rate. Based on the research above though my view on the Fuchs 5w40 hasn't changed and I'll stick with it.

I've had a used oil analysis done and will try and dig out the results if anyone is interested.
