  • Vanos preventative mod

    Hi all,

Was looking at an old EVO this afternoon and thier MCoupe buying guide suggests that there is a way of avoiding VANOS failure. They say that the bolts that attach the trick cams to the engine are the cause of the problem and they can be replaced with higher spec cams. The guide says that it should be about £100 and can be done as a precaution.

Is this true, and has anyone done it? Sounds like a good idea if it works.......

    Cheers
    Matt

Did you mean to say... replaced with higher spec bolts. If so this is a recall which should have already been carried out on all S50's.

You can phone your BMW dealer, speak to their service dept quoting your chasis number and they can tell you whether the vanos bolts recall has been done.

Nope, have written word for ward what it says in the Engine bit of the EVO buying guide. Seemed strange to me that it could be done for 100 quid...Maybe they got thier facts a bit muddled up?

The bolt failure is the "real" VANOS failure, and causes major oil loss. Stronger bolts are fitted as part of recalls but some people say to replace them from time to time too.

I think it's the usual motor-journalist getting it a bit wrong; high spec bolts not cams.

IIRC the bolts were never longer than standard just have more tensile strength.

However, just because your car has had a recall on the bolts does not mean they will not fail again.

My mate Neil who had an m3 evo had his replaced and one day he had a shit load of oil on his driveway when he started the car. Lucky for him he switched off and sorted the problem with new bolts.

Also, remember, the Vanos filter is something else to change.

a new vanos filter and new bolts do not add much to an oil service, better safe than sorry!

explain what you mean by that?

The fix costs less than a tenner!
