  • Rear Quarter Removal

I need to get the return edges of my rear quarters repainted, as I already have the boot stripped out to check the floor, I am considering removing the quarters so that they can be painted, to a higher standard, on the bench.

Has anyone ever removed theirs or know if they come off easily or is a sealer is used on the joints?

I had the return edges done on mine when I bought it (due to a bit of rust from untreated stone chips). The body shop informed me that on the coupe, the rear wings are welded in (whereas on the roadster they are just bolted in place)

Rear wings are bolted on think, you can see the bolt holes in the attached picture.

Hmmmm, interesting. I've just checked in my Bentley manual again and it does seem to tally with what the body shop said about them being welded in places. I assume it's a combination of bolts and welds but could be wrong having never removed them or looked for the fixings.

Hmmm, interesting stuff, they are definitely bolted, whether there are welds in addition is another story!

          Original question still stands!!

I have a feeling that this will be one of those jobs that you get half way through and wish you never started. Don't listen to that little inner voice that tells you it'll be OK. Weigh it up. Is it really worth the effort to paint off the car?

                Rear Wings

They are bolted on & a bit of bonding / sealant. I had mine off both sides & replaced them - more than once! They came off pretty easy, mine was a 1998 car & there were not any welds on them.

Thanks Doug, would you say that there is any likelihood of damaging them during removal?

Sorry to dig up an old thread, but can you remember how they came off? I've accessed the front bolts on the door shut OK to get the sill cover off, but I can't see how to access the bolts beneath the glass - you can't do it from under the wing with the liner removed. Or do the flanges stick up from the wing, hidden under trim? Any tips?

I don't think that DougW is active any more, as he sold his car a while back.

I still haven't got round to removing mine yet, but I can tell you that the bolts along the top of the wing are accessed from inside the boot area, hidden by the trim.

Let us know how you get on!

Oh jeez. And I've just put it all back after doing the top mounts.

Darn it! - but thanks, now I know what I'm up against.

One is also behind the tail lamp, but you probably found that one!

Be good to have an update when you do this. I probably need to change one of mine at some point and more detail is always better! Specifically how to refit the outer lower window seal?

Hi, I can confirm that after having my rear quarters, sills and front wings removed, that the rear quarters bolt on from the inside. Also bolts under rear arch liner to the sill. (where the temp sender unit is)

Be warned! Once you start digging behind the seens these areas will all have signs of rust due to water ingress over the years and you will start something you wish you hadn't. I ended up spending £1300 on panels from BMW and £2650 on paint and labour. Also had all panels and bolts etc waxoiled internally to prevent future rusting and used red epoxy primer (cars imola red) to hide any future stone chips.

I was shocked to see this rust and my car has been dry stored with only 50000 miles on clock. It's a minter now and well pleased with it but was a very expensive project from what was only a small 5mm rust bubble coming through on rear quarter.

I will post up some photos of the panels etc and the project......
