  • Dual Ear Diff Mount Mod & Changing the Guibo/Drive Shaft Coupler

I've been cogitating on two extra jobs, one big, one small.

My boot floor and diff mount are in generally good shape, although the diff mount has a 2mm crack.

Has anyone done the Randy forbed style mod where you put a new diff casing on the back of the diff and use two diff mounting ears?

The ears can be bought from bmw and it's an E36 M3 diff casing

Another much smaller thing, was going to replace the prop shaft shock donut/guibo, not sure if completely necessary but now at 90k miles thought it might be a good idea, whar results have people had with doing this? That and grease the U/J's. All a bit hard to get to without removing the exhaust centre section.

Any advice or tips are appreciated.

I do have a powerflex diff mount which I could fit in situ without removing the diff, think the diff mount is pretty worn..... Subframe bushes supposedly replaced a few years ago.

Quite a lot of info in this thread, particularly from this page onwards:

I believe the dual ear mount requires fairly extensive mods to the OE exhaust or the fitting of aftermarket rear exhaust section. There's a thread detailing the work undertaken by Redish somewhere but I'm still searching for the that

I think a few members have fitted the full blown RF kit but only Jim and Reddish have documented it, I am about to have a new Giubo fitted but am getting it down by my Inde with a few other parts at the same time. My diff mount also had a couple of mm split but I just had it rewelded and a couple of small gussets fitted to strengthen the diff mount and stop some forward / backward movement.

Dave, do you have any pics of your gussets? (oo err)

Maybe triangular ones on the outside of each side of the mount.

I'm taking the rear axle out, the dual ear does seem a bit involved so maybe just some mild re-inforcement. We have a coded welder at work so I was thinking of asking him to take a look.

Mine had a small crack, and some cracked spot welds.

I did a combination of RF kit (used to strengthen inside of cross member) and a BMW repair panel (that is signifcatly stronger than the original mount). Kept it single ear to avoid exhaust issues. Probably about as robust as is feasible without major rework.

Pretty much what i ended up with, but didn't get the kit from Randy, made it up locally.
