  • Correct S54 oil - in case you didn't know

    BMW (UK)
    Quality Enhancement Procedure
Bulletin No. 0011620100 Issue Date 07/09/2001
    E46/M3, E36/7 S54 Engine Oil Change

    Situation
Recent studies of the S54 engine have shown that the oil film of the 10W 60 grade (Castrol TWS Motorsport 10W 60), has improved long term lubrication properties over the current recommended grade of 5W 30. Therefore, the engine oil must be replaced with the new recommended grade.

    Vehicles Affected
All E36/7, E46/M3 S54 vehicles from start of production to 18 June 2001, as per IWS Viewdata.
    Action
    1. Carry out an engine oil and filter change, including applying a sticker to the Owner's Handbook. If this action is carried out in conjunction with a scheduled service, then any additional costs must be met by the customer. Castrol TWS Motorsport 10W 60 is available through the normal parts channels, in 1, 4 or 60 litre quantities.
    Additional note:

If the vehicle is included in the Quality Enhancement 00 34 32 01 00, this should be completed at the same time (refer to IWS Viewdata). Please use the suggested contact letter on 00 34 32 01 00 bulletin. If the vehicle is only affected by the Engine Oil Change, please use the suggested contact letter attached.
Please click here for customer letter.

    Procedure
    1. Carry out an engine oil change including replacement of oil filter:
    - Oil change to Castrol TWS Motorsport 10W60
    - Volume: 5.5 litres
    2. Affix sticker to the Owner's Handbook to the following pages:
    E46 M3 Coupe page 116
    E46 M3 Convertible page 124
    E36/7 M Coupe/Roadster page 114
    3. Check whether the capacities section in the Owner's Handbook gives the volume of engine oil as 5.5 litres.
If not, carefully replace the incorrect value (5.0 litres) with 5.5 litres.
    4. Advise customers of the correct procedure for checking the engine oil level (see also Owner's Handbook, Servicing, Engine Oil Section):
    a) Park the car on a level surface.
    b) Allow the engine, which has reached operating temperature, to idle for at least 15 seconds, then turn it off.
    c) Pull out the dipstick after approximately 1 minute and wipe with a lint-free cloth, paper towel or similar.
    d) Carefully push the dipstick into the dipstick tube up to the stop and pull out again.
    e) The oil level must be between the two notches on the dipstick.

      Edge 10/60 or------

This subject will roll on for ever!!!!

When you read the Opie oils recomendations and pages of info, one wants to go for the Fuchs 5/40 or Silkalene oil which they say is the biz.Yet one still holds back , cos BMW AG say 10/60.

When the engines are coming down the line in Austria, and they fill them with oil for their first fire, guess which oil 5+million litres, is put in to bench test for OK.When they arrive at their dealer presale service, Castrol goes in.

Opie say the 5/40 will quieten the S50 down---yet I still run on castrol and the same in the 23 year old Alpina B7 turbo-----WHY?.

Perhaps its the BMW warranty brainwash of past years, or marketing gone mad , OR--------What?
