  • Brake upgrade for UK track work

What are the current recommended upgrade steps for UK track work please?

I've got standard brakes on her at the moment and not really needed to upgrade as most of her previous track work was done on the Ring which has plenty of long straights..

I've not put my MC on the track and probably never will do, BUT, I have tracked a few other cars and in all honesty all I have done is fitted Ferodo DS2500 pads.

Providing you bed them in properly (which requires you to take beyond *ahem* UK road legal speeds) they are simply awesome on track & fast road use, whilst still retaining OEM properties when used tootling to the shops and back.
I have tried my hardest but never been able to provoke fade from a DS2500 setup.

£ for £ it's the easiest & cheapest way to upgrade the brakes to be more effective.

I have just put PFC Performance Friction pads on, not done a track day yet but very happy with the feel on the road and the price is fairly sensible too, from memory about £100 for a set as opposed to £160 ish a set for Ferodo.

They are supposed to be a good road/track compromise....

Thanks for the input, will check.

What are opinions on Pagid RS-29's?

Oh and I think you can get some nice brake ducts, probably works well with the standard setup.

Or pay Tarox or AP Racing about £2-2.5k for a big brake kit that will supposedly fit under stock wheels.

Indeed, big brakes are nice but probably too expensive. Will likely go the pad, lines route first..

Been quoted 5k to supply and fit AP brakes.
1k to supply and fit RS29 pads all round, braided brake lines and Castrol SRF fluid.

Does seem expensive to me, thoughts?

With the AP kit, it depends which version of the kit.

But 1K for pads, a fluid change and braided lines seems dear to me.

Buy the parts online and then take somewhere for them to fit instead?

In fairness I hate changing brake flexis, always the risk of the unions being fused together on a 20 year old car!

I've been watching these two kits on ebay which to me seemed more sensible in price:

                https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/BMW-E36-M...s/254176714434

                https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Tarox-Fro...M/232869818771

Apparently the 840/850 Brembo calipers fit the struts, although most of those are quite old now and would no doubt need a refurb.

                https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/BMW-E31-8...e/233750029792

                https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/BMW-E31-8...t/284093551097

Floating single piston calipers are a bit naff these days (but they do seem to do the job pretty well) and a set of 4 piston under the 17"s would surely be an improvement, any bigger than that and presumably you have to go up a wheel size, must be tight to get even the 4 piston in but some compact calipers I believe will fit.

You can also use adapters to fit a Porsche Brembo monoblock I believe.

Pads, fluids & lines should be £300-400 max.
Unless the pads are diamond encrusted or something?!?

This is the break down on the pads, lines upgrade:

                      Labour 200.00
                      RS29 Front brake pads 245.00
                      RS29 Rear brake pads 183.00

                      Castrol SRF brake fluid 113.68

then VAT on top. so nearly £1k - ouch!

                          wow those pads are expensive!

In fairness I see that they are circa £200 a front set from most places

The link to the Reyland supplied AP racing set, i think they make up their own kits but using genuine AP parts (although E36 M3 discs are maybe slightly bigger in diameter) maybe it's worth giving them a call as their add seems very sensible.

Labour wise I guess you can argue say 3 hours labour at £66 is not unreasonable but the parts prices are top whack.

Whos priced these up if you don't mind sharing?

                            I went for the following.

                            Yellow Stuff Pads
                            Braided hoses
                            Upgraded fluid
                            New braided clutch hose
                            Standard discs

Will let you know if the pads are good or complete shyte.

Ensure the AP’s fit under standard wheels
