I really wonder if that underpanel has different versions. Well it does seem so.

I don't have that little hatch/door in mine, right behind the x-brace.

EDIT: Just realised the hatch is on the Z3, while the E36 doesn't have it. They look identical bar the little hatch.

      Z3: 51712495551
      E36: 51712489775

      Pic off the internet.

Wonder if that is to access the sump plug.

I also found this pic, there seems to be something else attaches to the front, where the x-brace ends. I can't read the p/n off of that pic. I was fooled at first at it looked like a complete new panel, but that was a shadow fooling me. But in the center is some sort of 'drain/vent' piece sticking out.

Could be a non-M item as it's a pic of a US M3 that doesn't have the undertray at all.

The large undertray 51712495551 originally had no access panel but when the S54 was introduced they added the hatch but kept the same part number. Not sure what the part is on the picture?

I have compared the E36M3 and Z3M and the parts are very slightly different ,

              Z3M Hatched 51712495551

              E36 M3 Non hatch 51712491567

only difference I can see is on left side when fitted there is a recess which is wider on the E36 and has a lip which is missing on the 551 but is on the original NLA S50 part!

I’ve just managed to refit the front part of the undertray, after a long period when it been left off. Very grateful as I couldn’t have done it without the help of these photos, thanks

Things make much more sense with a picture or two

Please note upper flap should be positioned on top edge of oil cooler radiator
