  • What tyres for M coupé?

    Hello,
    I'm completely new here.
What tyres do you recommend on an M coupé?
I have read that some of you recommend Goodyear F1 GSD3? Are they still available?
At the moment I have Bridgestone Potenza RE050 on my car and it is an absolute disaster... The car trembles enormously around 120 to 160 KPH... The problem is not situated with the rims or any other part of the car, so it has to be the tyres... The car has been checked completely by BMW and they found absolutely no problem whatsoever.
    Did anyone have similar problems?
    Thank you !

When you say tremble do you mean a vibration or tramline? I've ran BF Goodridge. They lasted well with plenty of grip but soft side walls. I've replaced the BF Goodridge with hankook rs2 tyres, they're more of a track tyre so have bugger all grip when cold, but when warmed up they're totally different. Also the stiffer side walls has improved the handling. A lot of people recommend falken 452, my only experience with these are on my wife's mini cooper s, IMO they're worth the price but they never seem to last long on the mini. Look on www.camskill.com or .co.uk, they usually have the best prices.

        Welcome.

I have just changed from Toyo R888's to Pirelli P Zeros and my car has developed the same problem, a vibration / rumble at 80-100mph.

My first thought was that it could be wheel balancing but they were done on a top quality machine.

The tread pattern might be the culprit, just resonating in the cabin but I will start with a rebalance and obvious wheel / suspension checks and then go from there.

Before changing tyres I would do the same on your car........... I think that most high performance branded tyres should be fine for street use on MC.

Interesting, I'm also on P Zeros and the MC has an unbalanced wheel feel starting at around 70mph and continues through to 110mph (haven't been beyond that because it's quite a vibration and I bottle it, lol). Haven't had time to get the balance checked yet

Im currently running Continental ContiSportContact 3's and dont have any of the troubles you guys mention - tested on track obviously

They were also good in the snow we had this year, far better than the Goodyear GSD3's

              Thanks for the advice!
The tyres at the front are worn by 25%, the rear by 50%.
              The standard wheels are mounted
In the beginning everything was quite fine, but it just keeps getting worse.
The wheels have been balanced multiple times, the alignment has been done twice : everything is perfect.
The car has been completely checked by BMW and an independent garage specialised in M vehicles: differential, all the axes, suspension, everything is ok.
Since a few thousand kilometers I also have that resonating sound in the cabin at around 50 to 80 kph.
The car also trembles at e.g. 140 kph when you put it directly into neutral.
Previously, the car also had the same Bridgestones but 1 tyre in the front was completely worn out (inside, outside was fine), so I had to change the two front tyres and since then it just keeps getting worse
The car has done now approximately 151.000 km.
Does anyone have experience with Michelin Pilot Sports 3? Or Good Year Assimmetric (1 or 2)? GSD-3's from Good Year or Pilot Sports 2 are no longer available in Belgium.
              I certainly won't take the Pirelli's...
              Thanks!

                Oh, I forgot,
The rims have been straightened too... (one rim wasn't 100% straight anymore)

Could it be the common problem of binding calipers? Take the car for a drive and check the front brake temps by touching the wheel. Binding calipers can cause a rumbling in the car almost identical to an unbalanced wheel.

I have always run Michelin's, used ps1's and 2's on my 330ci then when i got my mc i put ps'2 on it and now i have the ps'3. Personally i think they are great on the road and track, i wont use anything else now as i have full faith in them. Some people say i should try others especially cheaper brands but as im happy with these i just stick with them.

I use Michelin Pilot Sport - 3s and have never had any of the symptoms mentioned.

Must be something wrong with the car - brake caliper binding sounds likely.

                        I don't agree........He's had his car checked.

Could also be the tyres going slightly out of balance as they wear unevenly....I have had this with more than one brand on the front of my C55 as the tyres approach the wear bars.

The tread pattern may be partly to blame for the resonance in the cabin, particularly if it's polybushed, all the road noise gets transmitted into the car.

That's the route I took. 2 fully serviced front calipers later... no difference. But at least I feel better about the brakes, lol

                            Hello,
                            Thanks for the advice.
                            I will check those calipers.
During this week, I am going to try driving with the car with another set of wheels...
I'm curious what the result will be...

Probabily check the balance and tyre pressure..
I see an good price the hankook rs3 ,probabily the next tyres will buy it.
