It's quite an easy job as the rack is at the front of the subframe held on by two nuts/bolts. Fiddliest bit is undoing and refitting the PAS pipes.
Does it need to be a Z3 rack, or do other E36 3 series steering racks fit?

is there any way that the airbag could be covered too as it looks a bit plasticy???
You're right, but unfortunately it is forbidden to cover the airbag.

it can be done, but i think it might affect the way its supposed to work.

          • If you want to cover the airbag up it's best to disconnect it too as it will have unpredictable deployment and your new cover might take your face with it!!

            • yep your right chris but some may say it would be an improvement

              • Christ, Raid don't make it easy to find/buy their steering wheels do they? I've looked on the following site (which I think is Raid's?) but it doesn't show any products on the page. Very helpful. http://www.tuning-rdi.de/index.php/c...th-Airbag.html

Also found an eBay shop but the seller only appears to have the version with the silver writing across the airbag cover, which I'd rather avoid:
                http://stores.ebay.de/emotion-car-pa...=p4634.c0.m322

Does anybody know of a UK distributor for Raid? I've found a Porsche club that sell online, but heavily inflated prices it seems http://www.porscheshop.co.uk/acatalo...sche_raid.html

                • Lol brings back memories of me trying to source one and speaking to raid in germany.

I eventually sourced a mint second hand one (it was only a few months old) from a Porsche on eBay but since then others have purchased through german eBay.

                  eg:

                  http://www.ebay.de/sch/i.html?_nkw=r...catref=1&_sc=1

You can search on "Raid Z3 340mm" as well and get the full kits with the hub adaptor or just get the hub adaptor by itself if none of the kits have the wheel you want:

                  http://www.ebay.de/sch/i.html?_nkw=r...catref=1&_sc=1

Its only if you need a wiring adaptor for an S54 dual curcuit bypass you may need to source that from Raid if you don't fancy making one up yourself (if you have a pre 04/99 car you don't need the wiring adaptor)

                  Happy shopping ;-)

                  • Cheers Jon, bloody hard work isn't it? I'll have another look. I was struggling to find any that were 340mm and mentioned BMW. So I can order pretty much any 340mm Raid wheel as long as I get a Z3 compatible hub kit - is that correct?

Seems the majority now have black writing across the airbag. God dammit - just do a plain wheel! lol. Beginning to wonder whether to bother

                    • Yep (well I've never read any differently in my research into them) any of their wheels with the correct hub adapator.

Obviously the Porsche ones with paddle shift are a little overkill though ;-)

If you search Raid Z3 340mm you normally get quite a few listed on German eBay.
