Default S50 m coupe

Hi, test drove a s50 m coupe this weekend, found there wasn't much mid range power, but it did pull hard at the top end of the rev range, on tick over they didn't seem to be as smooth as a modern car with an occasional hunt, a bit lumpy. I was just wondering if this is a feature of the car or a symptom of something like vanos?

If anyone has an s50 m coupe perhaps you could confirm as pretty normal or something else. Many thanks Dave

Has the car had any work done to the Vanos? If not then I suggest you factor in some work from Mr Vanos in the future.

The other common issues related to lumpy idle are relatively cheap and easy to put right.

If you can get to see another forum members car then that will help you make an informed opinion on whether what you heard/experienced were common traits or not.

Where are you located?

Default thanks

thanks for reply i havnt bought the car yet, am basically thinking about it, but this was a symptom that sort of put me off, its alot of money for a car with issues but they are old so maybe they all will especially at the entry level!!

Is the s50 a motor a fragile one? the car has covered 95,000 mile. no history of rebuild or vanos work, im based in nottingham, thanks dave

As Big02 suggested if you gave your location then maybe you have a Forum member nearby who could let see/try their car to see how it compares with the car you've driven. I've done that for potential owners in the past.
My car doesn't have any of the symptoms you have noted. I'm sure there are more mechanically informed members who will come forward with suggestions, it could be Vanos, plugs, plug leads, a duff coil pack etc. You need to drive a few examples to be able to get a comparison.

The nature of the engine is top end power, so sometimes the mid range can feel a little lacking compared to many modern turbo cars, inc turbo diesels!

If it has niggles you're unsure of, maybe suggest you're interested IF they sort them. Could be anything from a 20+ year old breather hose that needs replacing, or the Vanos solenoids need attention or the full Vanos service/swap. Have somebody run diagnostics on it perhaps, that may provide a guide as to what's behind it.

S50 is a great engine. I've had to have the Vanos solenoids on mine re-soldered. It's pretty common for them to need a bit of bridging solder
