  • M5 E39 Engine swap

I found last week a perfectly good condition E39 Engine from a M5 (V8 400cv), and I try to google a little but didnt find anything about the operation of swap that engine with our 3.2 6 cyl engine.
Anyone here know if it is possible that transplant without too much modifications on the engine cage?

I think it will be a great upgrade.. hehe

you will need to get someone to make the engine mounts. the most difficult part of it, other than the new custom manifolds and exhaust will be the new wiring loom, there wont be anything that will match up on the car or the engine.

i think you would be looking at at least €10k for the whole process

I stand corrected ! Maybe it was the M3 they put the 5.0 into.

Yeah. didnt think about that :S
The engine itself is selling for 3.000€ (+/- £2400) with 34.000 km (+/-21.200 miles).
I guess that price dont include the wiring or gearbox?.
            Have to confirm.

even if its just the engine, its very very cheap!

even if it was the wiring loom comes with it, you will find it very difficult to match everything up!

Not going to happen without a dedicated and willing techie.
                DME is the sticking point.
                Nothing will be compatible.
Given the fuel burn on my M5 c/w my s54 cars, I wouldn't even bother trying to do this.
Coupled with that, the extra torque, and the delicate nature of our subframes, this is a disaster waiting to happen, unless this is addressed as well.

Not sure of the weight difference between the lumps either, but I'm guessing that balance will also suffer.

It has been done before. There was a Z3MC running in the Dutch Super Challange with a a E39 M5 engine IIRC. You would need standalone engine management as someone mentioned above.

That turbo'd Z3MC that John is referring to is super quick. Does 10sec 1/4 miles.

I think forced induction would ruin the driveability and character of the MC. But then I'm not a fan of turbos/superchargers in general.
