  • Cruise Control (Optional Extra?)

Good morning and please excuse my ignorance on the Z3 Coupe and all its possible extras when new. I'm about to commit to my first coupe a very low mileage example less than 40k miles so hope its a good un? I have some must halves and one of them is CRUISE CONTROL but am I correct in saying this was not a standard fitment for the UK market?
Any information is most welcome on the cruise control and any tips for buying a used coupe.

    Many Thanks in advance
    George

welcome to the forum, cruise was a factory optional on UK M Coupes but can be retrofitted

Cruise can be retrofitted easily to the later & rarer S54 models which were "fly by wire" throttle control.
Whilst it can be retrofitted to the earlier S50 cable throttle cars, it is not straightforward and you may have issues with your insurance company as they don't usually jump for joy if they find you have done some modification to your throttle control

Cruise control was one of my "must haves" as well, so I was patient and waited for the right car to come along with it fitted. Plenty of them exist as BMW buyers were known for going into the showroom and ticking all the option boxes.

It's easy to spot if a car has it - look at the interior photos and if you see a 2nd (lower) stalk to the right of the steering wheel (below the wiper stalk) then the car has cruise control.

See my photo below for reference:

Thank-you for all your responses, understood cruise control was an option, unfortunately the low mileage (37k) S50 I'm looking at does not have cruise control and it seems not straight forward to retrofit compared to the S54 :(
If we ever get rid of this virus the car will be well used around Europe therefore a must have, has anyone retro fitted the cruise control to a S50 or know any specialist who can?
          TQ

There is a list of parts on a thread somewhere if you do a search. It can be done, bit of a faff but it's possible.

The S50 comes pre wired for cruise control so its a case of getting hold of the parts and having them installed, any good BMW garage who knows E36 era cars will be able to fit the parts and its not a difficult job if good used or new parts are bought.

There was a great guide on the forum but over time the pictures have been lost.

I've got a copy of all the pictures on a Word document and list of part numbers from Wania's guide to installing CC on S50 Coupe. I can send them to someone to transpose them on to the original thread if it would help. I carried out the installation myself last year but as yet it's not working, suspect I've got to get the ECU informed of the modification. Not been to see my Indy to check because to the current Covid-19 situation, on my to do list.

Would love to see the pics, mine doesn't have cruise and might add it.

Pete - How long since you had a Cossie!?

Never had one, it's my nickname from school (65 years ago) before there was any Cossies on the road!! Surname is Cossavella so you see where it comes from.

Yes Pete send it to me and I will try and get the pictures back onto the forum. I don't think any programming is needed so you may have a faulty part ?

                            I'll say it again...
Check with your insurers what the situation is with retrofitted cruise control before fitting...
