  • Outside temp gauge/sensor

My outside temp gauge either doesn’t read at all, or jumps randomly. I think as mine is a 1998 car, the sensor is in the front bumper and last year, we cleaned the sensor when it was up on a ramp but it didn’t fix the issue.

I think the sensor is discontinued (from memory, I think Dave said it was NLA), but I remember someone saying the had bought one direct from VDO.

Has anyone else found a like for like sensor or is taking a punt on this part my best bet?

The sensor in the bumper is for heated washer jets. The external temp sensor driving the gauge in centre console is behind the driver's side rear wheel arch. Sounds like the contacts are corroding causing erratic reading. Bignorry had similar just last week https://www.z3mcoupe.com/forum/showthread.php?t=21037

I did a post a while back on this and posted alternate sensor. I have one fitted to my coupe, and it works fine.

I'd say if you have erratic measurements then probably a careful cleaning of connection is all that is needed.

Thanks both, I remember I had bookmarked the replacement sensor for future reference/just in case. I’ll get the existing one cleaned up and report back.
